I remember watching a program a few moths back where a local historical society found a trench system with occupants.  Unfortunately they were unable to identify the bodies accurately.  They knew that they were British and which regiment they were from but that was all.

They will continue to dig up bodys there for decades to come. There were enough blown apart then buried by shell fire.

I heard they dug that lot up because they're building a road through the area. :P

The road building seems to be a recurring theme when they're discovering these trenches...

Sad isn't it.

On average 60 bodies a year are found by archiologists.
6 British soldiers were found the other day, one has already been identified, and the others they know the unit by their tunic buttons.

Very often Andrew, daily I expect, especially when the field are being ploughed or construction work is taking place.

What happens after a soldier's body is found? Is it given a military burial or what?

Are these finds from WW1 or WW2, or both?? Do they find a lot of American soldiers also?

Sorry for so many questions, i'm just really curious ;)

These are from WWI. The ID discs they used in those days don't usually survive. All human remains are treated with respect & given a military funeral with full honours.

PS. I can't find anything on the most recent discovery.
This describes a similar discovery in the same area in 1992. http://www.hellfire-corner.demon.co.uk/tedanco.htm

I am guessing that this area is too big to reserve as a national memorial, Like Gettysburg, PA.

yes ypres was a nasty battle.  i'd hate to find a container still full of chem weapons(or an unexploded shell). it happens all the time in Iraq-some curious little kid finds a 155 shell undetonated and brings it home to show his family then-boom

Were chemical weapons really used during WW1???

I really wish WW1 hadn't of become a forgotten war. :(

yes, and nasty ones too, no farts or anything... they used chlorine gas and stuff like that, many times due to winds instead of drifting to the enemy trenches it just came back to plague the perpetrators :( sad... very sad  :-/ and i can tell u right now, when u got gassed u were not a happy camper....
