A close call (In real life)

Postby chomp_rock » Sat Oct 11, 2003 7:58 pm

Today I was flying. It was a merry time with only light turbulence. I cruised around for a while. When It was time to go back (back to klna) I began a gingerly pattern and as I went on crosswind I heard on the unicom, a rather frightening report. A piper had just reported that he was in the same posistion as I! I looked about and spotted him off of my 2 o' clock about 5 nm away. I reported to the PIC and he thought it was on approach after the pland behind us (NOT SO!). We looked away and I began a shallow turn. suddenly I looked off of my right and he was coming almost straight at me. He was about 15m away I guess he did not see me so I began a fast steep 75 degree turn away and put the A/C in a   -700fpm decent, he never changed course! the guy after me in approach could not believe what he saw by the sound of his voice.  I was only a little shaken and landed incedent-free. What a day!

Glad you made it back down.

Reminds me of something that happened to my brother.  When he was learning the traffic pattern and landings, this guy who built a Ultra-Lite started flying out of our airport.  Now, as far as I know, you need no licence to fly one.  Well, my brothers on downwind when this guy takes mid field.  He climbs out ignoring the traffic pattern and flies right front of my bro.  The instructor had to take the controls to get out of the way.  Everything was fine, and I don't think the Ultra-Lite pilot was ever repremanded, because just yesterday I saw him circle over my school a few times, at about 400 feet.  I guess some people just need to keep a better eye out.

I heard that a Piper once landed on top of a Cessna at my local airport. Surprisingly the Cessna was able to support the Piper and landed ok :o

You should have hit the radio and yelled "Oy Mr. Magoo shove your labrador on the roof he'll tell you which way to go!!!"
