rather abrupt title:) but still the case.
now i sent a package over to the states which contained a letter a key ring and a CD, now the letter and keyring made it in one piece, but the CD had snapped in half, now stupidly it didnt have a case but i didnt have any spare and i wasn going to buy one just for this. my question is, was this an act of god or was it an act of those who think they are god, said people being customs. i have a hard time believing it would just snap as i have tried on numerous to snap a cd and it isnt easy, so even getting thrown around with the mail shouldnt damage it. it had a couple of pics of some of my trips to the States on it, nothing bootlegged nothing illeagal, but it would seem that customs has taken some scissors to it. can i have any comments questions and or suggestions??

Nah, it probably wasn't customs, because there's nothing illegal about shipping a CD internationally.  

Having worked for an airline though, I assure you, your bags and packages are not handled as gently as you'd hope.

Always protect your packages...especially ones marked "Fragile"....that's a HUGE red flag for the rampies who like to take out their frustrations on passengers.  lol

i can understand them mis handling it, heck i watched in horror as my brand new suitcase was thrown right into the hold of the plane, and then the added fun of trying to get the airline to pay for the repairs, or a new one.
but have you ever tried to break a CD? its not an easy task,
but your prob right, just very odd

I'm not surprised if it wasn't properly packed. Have you seen the way they treat mail? That's before & after those rough guys at the airline get their hands on it. LOL

Having worked in a shipping department for over a year and a half, i've seen some things that were totally unbelievable!

I reckon that the stuff marked "Fragile" for air transportation is either throwen out of the plane before it has landed or gets special treatment by the baggage handlers who run it over with one of those baggage trains.

Its easy enough to break a CD. They might bend but they are also brittle. Hit them hard enough and fast enough and they will just snap.

Craig, this is why you should always put CDs in a box! The post gets a rough time, and if you dump a couple of dozen suitcases on top you can bet the CD will give!
To give you an idea of how rough things are re-airlines, my friend brought one of these super-strong top-of-the-range flippin' expensive hard suitcases. On his first trip with it they managed to get an eight inch crack running down one side!!!

like i said i didnt have case:)
i knew it would be a risk to send it without but little choice. i will picl up some more cds and new cases while i am at it.
then again where possible i try to ship by UPS or Fed-ex, it may be a little more expensive but it is always going to arrive with a definate date and 99% of the time intact

Here is how baggage handlers work - They are gentle, loving, and careful with your luggage when you can see them. When you can't, they throw, crush, drive over, step on, kick, hit, drop, force into unbelievably small spaces, smash, slam, and drop heavy objects on your luggage.

Craig. I don't think a jewel case would make much difference. These guys are experts in their own field & a little piece of plastic wouldn't be much of a challenge. If you don't want to use a box, tape the CD inside something like 2 pieces of hardboard or thin ply to take the knocks. Protect the whole thing with bubblewrap or something similar. Then bung it all in a Jiffy Bag.

Alternatively get one of those heavy duty reinforced concrete/steel safes with extra kevlar and titanium armour plating. That should do the trick
