What aircraft pass over YOUR house?

Postby Travis » Thu Aug 14, 2003 12:28 pm

I was just wondering if anybody has lots of airplanes or helos passing over their houses every day.  I tend to see several 737s and a few DC-10s and sometimes (when the wind is right) 747s on approach into DFW.  Occasionally I'll see a Bell H-13 helicopter (you know, the ones from MASH?) pass over REEEEEAAAALLL low.  Its kinda cool, but loud. ::)

What aircraft do YOU see?

I live on final into Albany (KALB) and here's what I see:

737s
b1900ds

Yep, that's about it.  And when I say 737s, I mean like two.  The rest are all Beechcrafts....sad.
Great edit, Bob.

Having been corrected a few time to stay on the
topic. Few planes fly 'over my house'

Thank you!

I live on final to Calgary International, so basicly I see all sorts of commercial traffic, and some that isn't. Why just the other day I watched a Canadian Forces C-130 fly over, not really surprising; but what did shock me was the RAF VC-10 that followed not short after.

;D

How long a list would you like to see.....I live directly under the cross-field approach to the traffic pattern at Courtenay Airpark but also am in line with the westbound climbout for YVR and also in line with the air-lanes going to Campbell River, and Qualicum, and can see the entrys and exits for Comox.............our Airpark has a huge array of homebuilts and tons of floatplanes arriving and departing daily.....and many of them are vintage A/C.....Beaver, Stinson, Otter, Britten-Norman, Piper, Cessna, you name it, we have usually had it in here at some time or other..........recently we have had a Republic SeaBee sitting on the field..... very nicely kept too.........

This is the range of A/C I have been able to view personally.....they're my shots from my Olympus C-2040Z
A Stits Playboy homebuilt and a USAF Lockheed C-5B from Westover........

There are several airports within a few miles of my home. Unfortunately, not so many as there used to be as most of the former WWII RAF & FAA (Fleet Air Airm) bases in this area were closed for good some years ago. Shoreham, the oldest commercial airport in the UK is the nearest. I'm used to seeing all types of aircraft from microlights & GA aircraft to the big airliners flying in & out of Gatwick. We also get the odd pair of RAF Tornados or Harriers flying through at low level to the gunnery ranges off Portsmouth + RAF Chinooks & the coastguard S-61 SAR helos.

Today, apart from the usual Cessnas & Pipers (not to mention the local police MD902 Explorer helo) I've seen 2 Yak 52s (one of which forced landed gear up at Shoreham later in the day) & a Spitfire Mk XIVe. These are taking part in the "Airbourne" 4-day display at Eastbourne. Many display aircraft are using Shoreham as a base. I've been over there this afternoon & intend going again tomorrow.  ;)

I live in vRe: What aircraft pass over YOUR house?

Postby Fozzer » Thu Aug 14, 2003 2:23 pm

I live in veritable peace and tranquillity, (except when Hagar diverts his Police MD 902 helicopters over my garden just to annoy me instead)..... >:(...!
We have a few little Cessna 152/172's and microlights chuffin' overhead on occasions, which is nice, and not intrusive.... ;)...!
If I want a headache and listen to a lot of noisy aircraft all day, I'll get on my bike and go and visit an airport, otherwise I'm quite happy listening to the Sparrows chirping in my garden... 8)...!

LOL...LOL...LOL...!

Cheers all... ;D...!
Paul....not underneath Heathrow flight path... ;)...!

Hey Ken, with those two pictures I think you have covered the entire spectrum of aircraft! LOL

I used to live on the South Shore of Long Island on the beach for 4 years. I was in the appraoch pattern for John F. Kennedy. Now picture this. Every day after work, I would pack a small cooler with a few beers, walk out onto the beach, plop myself down in the sand and watch the aircraft come in one after another. I could almost see the pilots faces. So many liveries, colors, aircraft, it was incredible. From all over the world!!
The concorde would come in the same time every single day. I could actually watch the aircrafts nose extend. She just seemed to hang there as she came in.

Another interesting thing to do would be to watch at night. Now I was on the South shore of Long Island, so I was looking out onto the Atlantic Ocean or looking South "down" the East coast of America. On a clear night all you would see is the lights of the aircraft. The pattern would extend out for miles. They were like little fire flies following each other. When they started to get close, their lights would actually reflect off the ocean waves. That was a great four years of my life. It is where I met my wife.

We have since then moved to the North Shore of Long Island. I am now in the traffic pattern of La Guardia and Islip. Mostly MD 80's, 737's, etc..  I am directly under the approach for an Airport in Connecticut. Don't know which one but the AC are still a little high.

And finally, I am under some sort of pattern for all aircraft above 35.000ft who are headed East out over the Atlantic to most likley alot of you guys. I watch the vapor trail against the sun setting too my West.

I guess that is about it. Oh I also have Republic Airport, Roosevelt Field and the Grumman Airfield all within 20 miles of me.

An-2s, Mi-24s, and an Mi-2 that belongs to the police and frequently lands in the car park of the sports hall behind us (at least twice a day!).

I live very close to a small flying club on the old Rolls Royce airfield at Hucknall in Notts, UK. Loads of private light aircraft. But by far the best thing that ever flys (and I mean directly) over my house, apart from the local Police helo, is the Rolls Royce Spitfire PR MkXIX.
Last Thursday we got treated to a full 10 minute solo disply from my favourite aircraft. Just fantastic!

The usual bunch of 747's and airbusses which hang around schiphol (I live 40Km north of Amsterdam)

Occasional F-16 flight (usually low) and some helos (Lynx, chinook, Bell and sometimes apache)
And in the summer a cessna once or twice in a week
Russian planes: IL-76 (all standard length ones),  Tu-154 and Il-62, Tu-134 and [url=http://an24.uw.hu/]An-24RV[/ur
