I'm U571 Destroy Me!

Postby Crumbso » Thu Jul 10, 2003 1:14 pm

Oy yes its on this weekend on BBC1 so no goddam adverts yes yes yes.

Video recorder at the ready.

I love this film. I know lots of other people hate it and think its boring but I think its great and it creates tension very well. Its not to one sided either. It sports ship to ship action some great depth charge scenes and some gun action where they raid the german submarine.

Anyone in england who either likes or hasn't seen this film its on Saturday BBC1 at 2015 hours

One of the few good movies i got on DVD. The storyline might be relatively unreal (there was an enigma though, u-boat captured by British convoy..ah you know the story.) Still a very intense war drama, and yes the FX were pretty cool.

both Das boot and Hunt for red october are better storywise, but the public wants just fancy explosions and they are served

well even the hunt for red october had its fictional storyline. The Red October was a Russian warship in reality, was involved in some problem, dont remember what it was. But yeah I prefer Hunt for Red October over U571..to some extent

I prefer the WW2 theatre. The storyline is wrong but most of them are.

I think that out of all the sub films I've sen this is my favourite.

I hate U571. It is a typical example of a good story ruined by the americans because they wern't involved at the time. The only good bit is when the german u-boat gets hit by a torpedo underwater and it practically implodes. The explosions use too much petrol as is the trend with hollywood and the catalina at the end looks like a model from CFS1! Worse than Pearl Harbour in my mind. :-/

I think, and I stress think, that Hunt for Red October is a fictionalised "What If?" based on the events superbly dramatised in the film K 19 Widow Maker.

I am usually wrong in these things.

WORSE THAN PEARL HARBOUR! ARE YOU NUTS?

The actors are much better than pearl harbour. If I wanted to see Ben Afflick hamming it up in front of a woman I'd see Daredevil

Granted Its wrong and we got the enigma instead I like the actual film of U571

The only reason it was fictionalised is that holywood doesn't think americans will pay to see films in which americans are not heroes or in lead roles.  It's a pity really.

The origional script for "Memphis Belle" was about the first RAF crew (possibly RCAF) that finished their forty mission tour of duty but again holywood wouldn't back it and at that time the British film idustry didn't exist.  The only real problem is that people who don't look into the real history of the world grow up with a false immpression of reality.

As far as I know, Hunt for Red October is based (loosly) on the Tom Clancy novel and has no real life links at all. K-19 is a true (loosly again) story.
I'm with Woodlouse here. I hate this film. Why does Hollywood feel the need to rewrite history to suit themselves so often? It could have been a good war movie but they had to add the Enigma bit that was just so not right. The crew of HMS Boxer would turn in their graves at the thought (the guy who actually got the Enigma is still alive and well.) Das Boot is just so much better than this rubbish.

Well, I don't know about the reality of it, but movies pretty much do a good job of screwing Clancy's novels up pretty good.  Hunt for Red October was a fantastic book and after reading it, I can barely even watch the movie (Sean Connery as a Russian with a Scottish accent didn't help).  Patriot Games and The Sum of all Fears also are equally screwed up.  But as was stated in a recent posting, his books are going downhill too.

Why do all these authors think they have to have the same characters in every book?  I mean, Jack Ryan has got to be about 90 now. ::)  It doesn't have to always be a sequel.  In fact it might have helped some to NOT be a sequel...

The Hunt For Red October was based on a true story and a real ship. Only the real ship was a missile cruiser and the defectors didn't get away. The K-19 was a nuclear sub that had a reactor problem, think theres an older movie about that ???.

I've been looking for 'Das Boot', & 'Battle of Britain', but no stores here sell them >:(

I guess i'll have to buy them over Amazon.

But what's the difference between a director's cut version and a 'normal' version???
