Windows 98 or ME

Postby RichieB16 » Sun Jun 29, 2003 4:39 pm

Ok guys, I'm currently planning on updating my computer and was wondering what OS I should get for it-Win98 or WinME.  I currently have WinME but since it is a version from Dell I'll have to buy another copy anyway.  I have found that my version of ME has had a lot of error issues and have heard that 98 is a lot more stable.  Also, I don't like WinXP so I have to decided if I would rather have ME or 98.  What do you guys think is better?

Hi Richie... ;D...!
There are others on the Forum who would happily shoot Win '98 down in flames..
But...
I have had Win '98 SE, (Second Edition), installed since it first came out, (after Win'95).
I find it simple and un-complicated, and only contains exactly what I actually require from it.
It always seems completely stable to me, although others often don't agree... ::)...!
If you don't like Win XP, (I personally am not too fussed on it, as a games player), then I would go for Windows '98 SE.... ;)...!
It makes a good "Games" System!
Up-grades are still available from Microsoft.

Cheers mate... ;D...!

P.S. now just wait for all the Win '98 SE haters to pour in...LOL...LOL...LOL...!

I happily run W98SE, but here's an "independent" review.  http://www.btinternet.com/~cerrig/

I run Me. But I suppose it comes down to what you are used to.
I have 98 at the office and it seems a bit foreign to me. Also, I think Me has some features that (for some reason) aren't on the 98 that I use at work.

I was downloading Windows Updates the other day and noticed that they mentioned something like "Windows 98 is being reclassified to 'some kind of Obsolescence' - Don't recall the exact words but it seemed to me to mean that Updates and new Security stuff won't be as big a priority as for the later versions.

Something to think about anyway.

(If you go into Updates for Outlook express 6 - you'll see what I'm talking about - that's where I saw the message about 98.

Well,if you insist on one of those 2 OS's then go for Win 98.Win ME is,in my opinion, the biggest piece of rubbish around-all they did was pretty much sell the beta of XP.lol.If you don't mind my asking, why don't you like XP?

Hi Lurch... ;D...!
If you are anything like me you can often blag an old free-bee copy of Win '98 SE off of one of your mates... 8)...!
Whereas...
A boxed version of Windows XP Home Edition will cost you an arm and a flippin' leg... :'(...!

I personally use ME as I cannot get XP to run in an even vaguely stable manner on my machine.  I love the features of XP but I got fed up with re-installing all of my software every three days.  I think it's horses for courses and provided my flight sims and word processing software is happy, I'm happy.

The main reason why I don't like XP is that it has some compatibility issues with older games which I like and-to be honest, I'm not a big fan of how colorful it is; I like the more plain OS's.  Also, it's very expensive.

As Fozzer has already pointed out, Win98 is easy to get a free copy of from a friend (I have this ability) but I a,m used to WinME.  I don't know, I honestly think I like ME the best-but the question is do I want to buy a copy of it.  On that, does anyone know how much ME costs now?

I use ME & have few problems with it. However, given the choice I would stick with Win98 SE. Me is is basically an updated version of Win98 anyway. I don't remember much difference in the features apart from the colour of the desktop.  ::)

What do you guys mean Windows XP is too expensive. I paid $150CND for the Home edition. You guys were ripped off.
I don't think you can get Windows 98 or ME anymore in North America unless you get it second hand. XP is a far superior operating system than both 98se and ME.

Lurch, I'm really shocked at what you paid. I did the conversions (1 Canadian Dollar = 5.55Rand). That's almost $700 for XP!!  :o I'd be demanding my money back. And $180 for Flight Sim! I only paid $100 for the Pro edition. I'd be buying my software from American or Canadian web stores from now on if I were you.
