okie dokie here goes.
simply put where are good places to look to live in the US. my mum completes here B.A degree in a few months, and she is looking to work as a museum curator, so far research has shown the US has the most jobs avaliable, now what sort of areas would be good to look in and where would be avoidable. i know this is kind of a difficult thing as its rather general but any advice is welcome, to give you an idea, places she has seen are in Florida, Washington, Hawaii, Indiana, Oregan, california, and wisconsin. now obviously when it comes time to apply its going to be impossible to go to all those states as money isnt exactly flowing in but, is there any of those to avoid, or is there a particular state that looking in would be good?

it will change , we have big lakes and
lots of rivers and mountains and bottoms
[Flat land].
Do alot of checking around and look
for chamber of commerce in the place
you are interested in

thats the other thing, i forgot to mention, she is looking for somewhere like that, loads of flat land but also a scenic area aswell. but as you said a job is where you can find one at first.

Why don't you FS around some of the
places and look at them I know it's not
100% acurate but a lot of the landscape
is close, check KNAX my home airport,
that's pretty much what we got!!!

One thing is for sure, don't come to Houston.  That's all I can tell you.  The weather, primarily, sucks, for lack of a more eloquent word.  It's always humid, never snows, and is a lot of the same.  You gotta have some big ones to move here voluntarily.  I particularly liked South Dakota amongst all my road trips, even though it was a bit... 'isolated'.

Hey Craig, Well, almost Anyplace you go in America has a museum, so it's really what part do you want to live in. As with anyplace, there are area's to avoid, but in general, your museum isn't really in those places. Just from living here in NY, obviously NYC has ALOT of Museums,...all different types. I know out on the Island where I live, there are a few in the Hamptons. Actually there is an opening here at "The Museum for Aviation History". They are also looking for somebody to give free flying lesson too!!!   Haha, just kidding, that wouldn't that be great!

 Try to avoid California if possible, not that its a bad state, plenty of sunshine and senery, but its awfully expensive to live there.  Try Oregon or Washington, the state that is, both a very beautiful and green with a moderate climate.  The cost of living hasn't skyrocketed yet and best of all Seattle has the Boeing Museum of Flight!

as i said in the end it goes down as my mums final choice as it will be her who has to do the job. i keep trying to explain to her that it would be a good idea to perhaps take a short holiday over there, find a museum offering a job and speak to them but she is still reluctant somehow thinking she will fail if she does. Ok admitidly i would like a free holiday right now but hey thats between me and the members here  ;)
chances are she is looking more towards the pacific northwest as she wants that landscape and doesnt really like the hot weather. but as fly said new york has a ton of them to.

Tell her not to move west of the cascades. I remember weeks going by without the clouds ever clearing up even for a moment.

Idaho is much better

It's hot during the summer, and real cold during the winter

I have lived in NY, TX, NV and ND. For every good point I can find a bad point. Is the weather a factor? Like snow? hit the North Eastern US. Like snow and ungodly cold temps (-25*F for a day time high..not wind chill), go to the nothern plains. ( ND, SD, MT) I wont go on because you get the point. Like "X" said, the jobs are where you find them. The area that you end up at is only as good or bad as you make it.

I was born here, then at 23 had the good sense to move to Maine.  Then for reasons I still don't understand, I moved back here.  It's terrible.  Taxes are too high, the economy is...well...let's not even talk about the economy...

The only good thing to come out of moving back here is my girlfriend.  And now we're even talking about getting out of here.  lol  (Florida bound?  Hmmm...)

thanks VA. my mum doesnt really want to move to new york as she is trying to avoid the major citys. As it stands right now she is looking to apply for a job at a museum in hawaii, if that doesnt happen then it could end up being anywhere. she has also not ruled out the possibility of australia. personally i would like to move back to my home town of middle wallop but that wont happen, my next choice would have to be somewhere like florida or somewhere down south(i have a weakness for southerners ) apparently there is a chance also of a job in birmingham(uk not Alabama) but if she doesnt get that then its a case of moving abroad. sadly though its all her choice not mine(i just provide your suggestions) so i will just have to go in toe or move out on my own :) i'll keep you updated

i will say this though, for somethign she says she wants to do on her  own its amazing just how much time i am having to research all the jobs places to live visa requirements moving companys and so on

my next choice would have to be somewhere like florida or somewhere down south

A little warning with South Florida:

Almost never stops raining, especially in hurricane season.
VERY hot when its not raining, sometimes reaches 94 where i live (south)
House prices are slowly rising now; they used to be in the 140,000s (average) now its about 180,000s. You might still find something good though. (now this is in Miami..)
LOTS of immigration.
Taxes might slowly start to rise due to this.
High level of crime..
Flooding (especiallly in hurricane season) will drive you nuts

Some pros:
Nice beaches
A couple of museums (air and space, sea, etc)
Pretty good international airport and regional airports.
LOTS of malls
Pretty good entertainment sectors.
An expanding residential sector in southwest miami with fairly reasonable housing costs.

My advice; visit it a several times....and i mean it
