World War II Flags

Postby Scorpiоn » Fri Apr 18, 2003 9:45 pm

I've (kind of) made it a mission to have the flags of all four major nations of World War II, and if I'm feeling particularly zealous, maybe Russia too. ;D  I'm just in wonder about just what those flags are.  I have the German naval ensign, and the modern American flag.  I know what the WW II American flag looks like (48 stars), but has the British flag changed any?  And what do (did) the Russian and Japanese flags look like?  I'm thinking the Japanese flag looks like what it does today, or the one with all the rays coming from the bottom.

The German Flag was a black swastika in a white circle, surrounded by a red field

The Japanese flag was pretty much the same as today but had red "light beams" comming away from the red "rising sun" in the center.

The British flag was the same.

The Russian flag was the standard communist flag. Red background with a gold scycle with a hammer going through it was a single small gold star by the top of the scycle, these were in the top left.

French Flag remains the same.

Canadian flag was red with the union jack in the top left corner. It had the canadian coat of arms on the right side.

Italian flag same as today.

I believe the Japanese had a couple three. At least two of the three for sure.

All white with the red meatball in the center.
White with red meatball and red rays.
White with white circle and red rays.

And wasn't the German one still the double headed eagle - or the red one with the cross like in the game - the swasticker was for the Nazi party - at first anyway.

The German flag from 1933 onwards was the Swastika.
The one in CFS3 with a swastika instead of the iron cross was the navel ensign. In the first world war the austrian flag was the double headed eagle I think...

Oh and I have a Union Jack (From pre WWII) and a nice big Communist flag. It is my mission to put the Commie flag up a flag pole out side of my school.

The national flag was the "basic" Red Sun in a field of white.  THe others - with the "rays" were "battle" flags.

The Japanese flag was pretty much the same as today but had red "light beams" comming away from the red "rising sun" in the center.

Simviation Style

Postby Scorpiоn » Sat Apr 19, 2003 10:09 pm

I just knew I could get this question answered here quick.  I've noticed that the Simviation forums always fumble over general topics (for example, what happened during the invasion of Poland), but should I ask any specific question (like "What role did Panzer Division 'blah blah' take during the invasion of Poland') it'd be answed in 60 pages!  Just struck me as funny how the little things get discussed over.  It's also scary that you guys can know so much detailed info on such a wide variety of topics!  Namely Felix!  Can we we ever ask a question he doesn't know the answer to!?  :o :D

I have a book (one of the thousands) that deals with the Third Reich.
Of course the German national flag during the Nazi years was the plain swaztika type, however, the Germans apparently had a real fetish about flags.
There was one for almost every branch and unit of the Party. There would be at least 50 different flags listed for one organisation or another, ie the SA has theirs, SS had theirs, the Luftwaffe had theirs etc.
They all seem to be based either on the swaztika or the 'maltese' type cross, or both.
;D ;D ;)
Here are the 'State Flag' and 'War Ensign' respectively:

I would suggest getting the russian flag. Its really cool. Just get one with a bigger hammer and sickle.

I really like that german battle ensign though. I might get one if I get the chance.

And Scorpion, there should be NO doubt on the british flag. Its been the Union Jack ever since the UK was founded which was about the same time as american history starts... ::) ;D ;)
