Out on Tuesday evening playing in the garden and Ryan jumped up to get his toy and came down awkwardly, this resulted in a very bad fracture to the rear leg. We rushed him into the vets and they referred him to a specialist in bone fractures, so the poor lad now has a couple of plates and screws in his leg and we have to keep him quiet for the next four to five weeks, which given his love for playing will be a full time job.





It's just amazing how quickly he's adapted to the surgery and it's all we can do to stop him from his favourite pastime of chasing the cats around.

Animals can be crazy wonderful about injury and pain.

We adopted a Lab/something mix about 10 years ago, estimated age 4. Joyful, playful and full of energy, she tore her left Achilles tendon playing catch one afternoon but never uttered a sound. The only way we knew about it was that she was walking on that toe instead of the bottom pad. Took her to the vet, got a new tendon and walking cast and brought her home. Well, it's now winter with plenty of snow so the walks were uncomfortable but not too challenging. Again, not a peep out of her.

The following week, to the day, she tore the other Achilles tendon without a single sound of complaint. Again, we only noticed her walking on the toe. So, back to the vet, another replacement tendon and walking cast. Both back legs now but not a single sound of complaint. The walks became a bit more arduous but she was so willing to improve. Six weeks of snow booties and careful walks with never a peep from her.

In the end, she was stronger than ever and enjoyed years of leaping fences and jumping into snow banks. She's much more sedate now but still likes being outdoors if it's not too hot. My only worry is that I won't know if she's sick because she simply never complains.

My wife reminds me that I need to take a lesson from this.

Poor Guy!! Wow Rich, that must have been pretty traumatic for him and you & the Mrs. I hope he has a fast recovery. You'll have your hands full trying to keep him calm, not so much right now as he's probably still kind of traumatized by the event, but in the weeks to come I'll bet. Good luck and give him a pat on the head for me.

Thanks for the replies chaps, I must admit when he came down I heard the bone break and it was quite sickening. But the little chap is bouncing back already, how they do that is beyond me, the big problem will be stopping him running around, which is turning into a full time job for us.

The X-ray of Ryan's leg reminded me of my right leg in 1954, after a motor car ran into my leg whilst riding my Motorcycle, fracturing both my Tibia and Fibula!
It kept me out of doing Nationa Service Drill Practice, etc, in the British Army for 2 years....(Shoes instead of boots!)..... ....!
My only motorcycle accident in 60+ years of Biking!

I imagine you would need very expensive Pet Insurance to cover those sorts of costs!... ....!

Paul the cost is not too bad £21.00 per month which covers him for up to £12.500 per year I think the surgery cost about £2000 so it's well worth it.

but you should have seen the other guy!! but i'm sure that wasn't a bit fun fozzer...yuk.....

my 250cc skooter fell on my foot when i had to stop too fast, and broke a bone there....lucky it wasn't a big deal..had to use my left foot on the piano pedal where i played in stead of the right................

He's getting lots of hugs at the moment and seems to think it's OK to misbehave more than usual. One thing he can't do is continue work on his tunnels in the garden he has three on the go at the moment which we have called Tom, Dick and Harry, still it won't be long before he's at it again.

The last one with the buster collar is current and the other two are about a week before he got injured. To see him walking around you would think there was nothing wrong with him but we have got as quiet as possible, which is easier said than done.

He's certainly a lively one and at the moment is doing all the things he's not supposed to, we have to keep an eye on him in shifts. I see agility training in his future to get rid of some of the energy either that or Sheep/Cat Dog trials
