Slightly paraphrased: "When British wool merchant Jonas Hanway tried to walk London streets with an umbrella in the 18th century, onlookers pelted him with rubbish and tried to run him over with their cars."
I expect I must translate this as carts or carriages since the 18th century was in the 1700s when most motorcars weren't?
I guess the Hollies can thank this fellow for the item's employment in Bus Stop.
Also, they continually threw a number of items at him -- when it rains, it pours.
