Totally different situation. The Loma Prieta event was much more serious and disastrous.

Here's the scoop on the Miami bridge collapse, coming from ME, not taken from news articles.

I am 5 miles SE of FIU. I have been at that very location many times in the past, and recently going straight north two blocks east of the bridge. The road, Tamiami Trail, runs E/W just north of Florida International University. Even that intersection two blocks east is nasty.

The bridge was supposed to help students etc in crossing that very dangerous road, conceived after a young female student was killed last year trying to do so.

There is a populated area just north of that location where many FIU students live. They were counting on the bridge for crossing.

4 confirmed dead, all in 8 vehicles under. Possibly more, haven't gotten the vehicles out yet. 10 taken to hospital in serious condition, those might be the workers that were on the bridge when it collapsed. The bridge was NOT open, only workers were on it when it collapsed.

Tamiami Trail is completely blocked and closed off. It will be weeks and weeks before it re-opens. Until then, a traffic nightmare will occur around that area.

Tamiami Trail in that area is 8 lanes (4+4). Runs east/west. That area is one of the busiest in Miami. The closing will heavily affect traffic, many students use it to get to FIU.
It will take weeks and weeks to clear the bridge and re-open the road.

The bridge was pre fab and built off-site, somewhere on the campus. It was put in place last week, not completed, not scheduled to open until next year. The bridge
span was 174 feet. The construction company had a celebration and touted the bridge as being completely safe.

The NTSB has sent 15 reps to investigate. The company that built the bridge has also done many local construction projects, but might have had red flags against it in the past. I don't know any further details on that issue.

The bridge failure was most likely a design defect, a materials defect, a construction defect, or all of the above. It was not due to an on-site accident. It just collapsed.

This is NOT the kind of road you want to cross on foot etc. Period.

That's not quite an accurate statement.

More on the construction...

An Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) method was supposed to reduce risks to workers and pedestrians and minimize traffic disruption, the university said. The school has long been interested in this kind of bridge design; in 2010, it opened an Accelerated Bridge Construction Center to "provide the transportation industry with the tools needed to effectively and economically utilize the principles of ABC to enhance mobility and safety, and produce safe, environmentally friendly, long-lasting bridges."

On March 10 the span was lifted from its temporary supports, rotated 90 degrees and lowered into what was supposed to be its permanent position.
When finished, the bridge would have been supported from above, with a tall, off-center tower and cables attached to the walkway. That tower had not yet been installed, and it was unclear what builders were using as temporary supports.

Authorities said Friday that the cables suspending a pedestrian bridge were being tightened after a "stress test" when the 950-ton concrete span collapsed over traffic, killing at least six people only days after its installation was celebrated as a technological innovation.

Senator demands docs about collapsed Florida bridge as reports of cracks surface

"Hey Tom, this is Denney Pate with FIGG bridge engineers. Calling to, uh, share with you some information about the FIU pedestrian bridge and some cracking that's been observed on the north end of the span, the pylon end of that span we moved this weekend.

Um, so, uh, we've taken a look at it and, uh, obviously some repairs or whatever will have to be done but from a safety perspective we don't see that there's any issue there so we're not concerned about it from that perspective although "obviously the cracking is not good" and something's going to have to be, ya know, done to repair that.

At any rate, I wanted to chat with you about that because I suspect at some point that's gonna get to your desk. So, uh, at any rate, call me back when you can. Thank you. Bye."
