gads....if i had property in that area, creating a firebreak would be the first thing i would do......even towns should have a substantial firebreak around them....doesn't seem unreasonable?.......but i could be wrong, as i don't know how big of a firebreak would be required....maybe too impractical .....
The fire was being driven by strong winds that night, up to 70mph gust. The fire jumped highways and freeways. You would have to have a fire break a few hundred yards wide. And it was moving so fast the first 2 days they weren't fighting the fire they were just trying to get people out of the way. These days everyone has cell phones and not landlines and the cell towers were getting burned so cellular service was spotty at best and power was out so there was no way of knowing if everyone got the evacuation orders so they were going door to door to make sure. Some of the sheriff and highway patrol dash cam footage is scary to watch. Some people had less than 10 mins to get out. One family lost their 14 yr. old son after the car they were escaping in caught fire and they had to try to get out on foot. They all got burned but only the 14 yr. old died. Very sad, worst fires in California history. Last I heard the death toll was up to 41. Most are being found in their homes.
