Poet Lemn Sissay was raised by the state. He talks about the empty space where his family should have been.

Literature has long been fascinated with fostered, adopted and orphaned children, from Moses to Cinderella to Oliver Twist to Harry Potter. So why do many parentless children feel compelled to hide their pasts? Poet and playwright Lemn Sissay tells his own moving story.

"Literature has long been fascinated with fostered, adopted and orphaned children, from Moses to Cinderella to Oliver Twist to Harry Potter. So why do many parentless children feel compelled to hide their pasts? Poet and playwright Lemn Sissay tells his own moving story."

The truth is, as in my sister's-in-law case. they don't know it. If you were abandoned as an infant or toddler and raised in an orphanage or foster home who you are, your roots and heritage, very likely are a large void in your life. My sister-in-law does not know who her real parents are, nor her ancestry. Is she Jewish? Maybe Italian or German? This can have grave complications in a persons life. Does my family have a history of breast cancer, alcoholism or schizophrenia? Are birth defects a subject of concern? What about average life expectancy?

It wasn't too many years ago that adopted people couldn't even legally obtain the records of their adoption. It was all under state lock and key.
They were basically locked out of their own life's story.

Try this..The next time you go to the doctor's office and the receptionist asks you to fill out the usual bazillion question health history form think for a moment that you're adopted and have no idea who your parents, grandparents or other relatives are. Now answer the health history questions?

Good one Hawk!..... ...!

You have suddenly made me realise how lucky I am, that all my forebears made and kept a fully documented history of themselves, with full details of every generation in my family, at present dating from 1714.

Further search will reveal more details dating back even further.

I have a wealth of hand-written letters, letters, certificates, photographs, family paintings, etc, with the family list getting longer every day!

A British family dating back to Iron Age times!

My own family tree is the size of a football field....(approximately)... ;) ...!

Jacob Barnett is an American mathematician and child prodigy. At 8 years old, Jacob began sneaking into the back of college lectures at IUPUI. After being diagnosed with autism since the age of two and placed in his school's special ed. program, Jacob's teachers and doctors were astonished to learn he was able to teach calculus to college students.

At age nine, while playing with shapes, Jacob built a series of mathematical models that expanded Einstein's field of relativity. A professor at Princeton reviewed his work and confirmed that it was groundbreaking and could someday result in a Nobel Prize. At age 10, Jacob was formally accepted to the University as a full-time college student and went straight into a paid research position in the field of condensed matter physics. For his original work in this field, Jacob set a record, becoming the world's youngest astrophysics researcher. His paper was subsequently accepted for publication by Physical Review A, a scientific journal shared on sites such as NASA, the Smithsonian, and Harvard's webpage. Jacob's work aims to help improve the way light travels in technology.

Jacob is also CEO and founder of Wheel LLC, a business he started in his mom's garage, and is in the process of writing a book to help end "math phobia" in his generation.

Our consciousness is a fundamental aspect of our existence, says philosopher David Chalmers: "There's nothing we know about more directly....
but at the same time it's the most mysterious phenomenon in the universe." He shares some ways to think about the movie playing in our heads.

Life's not perfect, and Life's Hard. 'Cause Everyone has to go through struggle (The Unknown) either now or later. As long we still alive.

Life's like a season, constantly changing, never know what the future will hold. Still "We are so blessed"

All Life is matters. Only a small drop in the ocean for what we do to reach out and save or change the mind of a person just one more day, "Choose Life".... "Hope and faith"

We as Human can bring people together to share the experience cultivate the courage, compassion, motivation and understanding connection that we need to embrace our imperfections.

Absolutely amazing. "We all face challenges and we all face the dark unknown".. Incredibly inspiring talk. Mr. Daniel Kish, Thank you.?

Daniel Kish has been blind since he was 13 months old, but has learned to “see” using a form of echolocation. He clicks his tongue and sends out flashes of sound that bounce off surfaces in the environment and return to him, helping him to construct an understanding of the space around him. In a rousing talk, Kish demonstrates how this works and asks us to let go of our fear of the “dark unknown.”
