Looking at the photo's, brought back memories of coughing, choking, and spluttering in the the clouds of steam and smoke in Paddington Railway Station, standing on the platform waiting for the Great Western Railway (GWR) train to carry me between London and Hereford in the 1940's and 1950's, with all the track-side grime covered buildings en-route!

...and never lean out of the open windows for fear of getting hot ash in the eyes!.... ....

...and never empty the toilet whilst the train is standing in the Station!... :naughty: ...!

Paul....Nostalgia..... in clouds of smoke!... :D ...!

Beautiful pics! Reminds me of my youth, standing on the edge of the platform at Birmingham New Street when a 4-6-2 mainline loco came thundering in. You could feel the power of it ripping through your body; like being in the presence of a huge dinosaur!

Does anyone else play Train Sim and build model railways in their loft?

S. (still trying to get back to the 1950s)

Steam has always been my number 1 interest, and I have been involved with locomotives ever since childhood. Many forum members here will know that I am also a very keen model builder.
So may I proudly present to you my steam engines:

My first steam engine, completed 1986 and named LOU-LOU, an 0-6-0 British Shunter type, built from plans published by Mr Martin Evans.
18 Months to complete:

My second build: #2036 , a 4-6-0 "Ten wheeler" from Illinois Central Rail Road, 1925. I drafted the plans for this loco myself with major input and help from the Chicago Rail museum in Illinois.
4 Years to complete, early 90's. (This loco was unique in that it was fitted with REVERSED Baker valve gear, which is what got me interested.)
This model is just under 7 ft in length, inc tender.

My third build, #24, a 4-6-2 Narrow Gauge loco from Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes. Built from plans I scaled down from a set of published plans.
Again 4 years to complete. This model is 10 ft long.

Day of the first steam trails.

Sadly I got no space or loft for a layout, otherwise I would have one, believe me.
I have not really tried Train Sims in depth as to yet.
But thanks for looking.

Jan

Great looking models Jan. That’s proper engineering!
They must be worth many $1000s now….if you could ever bear to part with them.
