Microsoft says that you are STUPID, and they'll help you

I have several reasons not to switch to Windows 10, among them are a couple of older, professionally important, programs that work under Win 7, but WILL NOT work under Windows 10.

It would cost me about $700 - $800 to buy new copies of these.

Well, Microsoft wants to help all of us stupid people who haven't switched over to Windows 10.

This all has to do with automatic updates.

If you have Windows set to automatic updated, and you DO NOT want it to start the Windows 10 update process, then you had better change it real soon.

My system has auto-update turned off. I review the available updates and decide what I do, and do not, want.

Sometime after the start of the new year, Windows 10 will be downloaded to your computer.

It will, supposedly, wait for you to confirm the install.

QUESTION: Right now, how many of you see a notice that Windows has downloaded, and is about to install, an important update?

Welcome to Windows 10 if you accidently click on the OK button.

Windows 10 will be made an automatic “recommended” update early next year

"Microsoft says its number one support request is people asking where to get the upgrade."

Really ??? That is their number one question? BS

"Then, early next year, it will be categorized as a "Recommended Update."

"This is significant, because it means that systems that are configured to download and install recommended updates—which for most people is the safest option—will automatically fetch the upgrade and start its installer."

"The installer will still require human intervention to actually complete—you won't wake up to find your PC with a different operating system...."

Unless you hit that OK button automatically, as you probably do for most updates.

Unlike some, I have nothing against Microsoft. That may change.

Good point.
I like to be in total control about what updates or downloads or whatever goes in in my pc.

This is one of the reasons I don't like Apple - as it seems to want to control all devices it produces and is indeed cool for dummies. Now MS seems to be following them with W10.

Whatever - I will always make sure that any updates need my approval and will not keep asking me if I say no.

I never was sure what all those Windows updates were about. I turned the auto update feature off soon after I got Win07 a few years ago, some of the updates were taking forever to finish. I've never had a problem with Win07 or any security issues, so far, anyway.

Microsoft seems to be forcing the upgrade to Win10 on everyone, why, I'd like to know? I'm staying with Win07 also because I've got stuff on it that I do not know if it's compatible with Win10. It might be different if MS had written Win10 to be fully backward compatible, but I don't trust them. We should not be expected to shell out $'s for new software of any kind.

I saw somewhere that if you're not satisified with Win10, you can downgrade back to whatever you had. Again, that's something I would not want to find out negative the hard way.

The key to this issue is being able to control and/or choose what updates you want, if you don't want to turn off auto updates. For Win10, there's been, I think, some confusion as to whether MS is going to allow that.

Any informed info here is welcome.

I had a weak moment and downloaded Win 10, after hours of download it screwed something up and no way could I get my PC to connect to my router and get back online. 90 minutes on the phone with my IP didn't help and 60 some minutes on the phone with MS helpline didn't fix it. MS help person ended up suggesting I had a broken PC. Not. I rolled back to 8.1 and then used recovery to get my internet settings back. A whole Saturday shot just to end up where I was before.

I have XPSP3 and I have only downloaded one update - the daylight time change, and it turned out I really didn't need that.

I keep my AV and antispyware up to date and it runs much faster than the 8.1 that was forced on my other computers.
