Now here is something that I didn't realise, after regularly following the route in my various Flight Sims and You-tube Motorcycle rides, that 30 years ago, Route 66 had been decertified, and lost all of its roadway signs.... ...!

Its even more popular now than it was ever was, with a constant flow of visitors exploring the route!
A chance to avoid the busy Interstate I40!

It seems a shame that all that history is being lost to the public!

Route 66 is always a magic route for me, especially the desert run from Albuquerque to Barstow via Flagstaff.
Truly wonderful scenery!

I drove the route from Chicago to LA back in the early '60s...had a ball. Somewhere out in Internetland there is a very good coffee table book about the route with excellent pix and anecdotes, about 20 years old, I think.

Yes, the history can get lost and we are left with only our memories. But what good ones, eh?

We as a family have travelled Route 66 many times by motor home and have flown over the route in our own aircraft to this location...

The eight (8) day event is well worth attending in October this year...

Now if one has not been to a Balloon Fest...make it a point to get there...as an aviator all I can say is they are Awesome...

There is no doubt that the Western USA contains some breath-taking scenery that I would love to travel by road...(on a Harley Davidson!).

Route 1 from Santa Rosa (Cal) to Los Angeles via San Francisco hugging the Pacific Coast , is another of my favourite rides.
And a ride from Santa Rosa (Cal) to Idaho, via the Nevada Desert and Utah!
...and a very hot ride from Los Angeles, through Death Valley, to Las Vegas!

Most of my daily Sim Flights cover those regions!

Some wonderful trips on You-Tube to excite me!

P.S...I fondly remember "flying" the whole of Route 66 in my Sim Beech Baron 58 in FS 2004 many years ago, guided by the road map, and reporting on the flight in Sim V postings!

Fozzer, the book I had in mind is “Route 66 American Icon” which is a series of contemporary (2011) black and white photographs that, for me, evoke the nostalgia of the time I drove the route. Of course, there are many, many others, including a very good one called "Roadhouse 66" with color photos of so many wonderful eateries along the route.

I, too, have take the LA-SFO Coast Highway drive...it does indeed cast a magic spell.

Better yet, the trip from San Francisco to Vancouver, BC, which can be done on a wonderful train that is well subsidized and therefore well taken care of. It actually runs from LA all the way up the coast but that misses the fun of some of the stops south of San Francisco.

I also fly that route in various low-and-slow aircraft over Orbx scenery which may not be perfect but sure captures the feel of the place.

The best bits of Route 66 in Arizona!

Just need the last Route 66 California bit now, to finish at Barstow.......before the frenetic trip through Los Angeles Valley to Santa Monica via San Bernardino...a section of Route 66 to avoid on two wheels!!

Wonderful stop-off's along the way; Arizona, Nevada, and California, with some amazing sights and scenery!
