The end of the World has arrived....

...for me!
I've suddenly found today, that my latest browse through my stored favourites has revealed a NEW version of Google Map.
We are now subject to a hastily thrown together a load of old cobblers, to arrive at a new version of Google Satellite Map with most of the very useful stuff missing from the old Classic version....
...and no way of getting back to the familiar Classic Version!
Most of my day is spent with Google Maps, and this new version is a big disappointment all round!
...anyone else tried it?

Yes, Google is constantly "improving" things that don't need improving.
When they can't "improve" it any more (like Google home page) they just discontinue it.

Jim...
The same thing happened to my trusty version of "Pale Moon" browser, which you recommended a long while ago, and I still use every day.
The latest version was not compatible with earlier Firefox versions, and I managed to find an early version, 25.3.2.(x64), which enables many of my useful Firefox add-ons, and I have to remember NEVER to download the latest version of Pale Moon!
Newer is not always Better!
Users of Google Maps have tried to obtain the previous classic version of Google Maps, with no success!

Bring back then Classic Version!.....

This should work for a little while.
https://www.google.com/lochpIt's not a problem for me because I use the Stylish extension, which lets you edit the CSS (cascading style sheet) properties of web pages. With Stylish the new format actually looks better.
If you are using Firefox or Pale Moon you can add my css hack (probably not perfect because it took me 5 minutes to write but it won't hurt anything).
Follow these instructions.
http://superuser.com/questions/318912/h ... ontent-cssThis is the code.
- Code: Select all
@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);
@-moz-document domain(maps.google.com),
url-prefix(https://www.google.com/maps){
.ml-searchbox-area,.gm-inset,
#ml-map>DIV>DIV:nth-child(8)
{opacity:.3 !important}
#gbwa,.gb_ma,.ml-floating-card-container,
.ml-lite-mode-popover-container,
.ml-gutter-bar-container
{display:none !important}}
Don't include "Code: Select all". That's something that the board added that I can't get rid of.

Browsing at the moment with the Classic Version....

....

....until Google discover that its users prefer that version, rather than the "New" version, and finally block all use of the classic version.
(On the Classic Version click the "Hide panel" to remove the annoying "Google advertisement" on the side of the map screen).
Enjoying Classic Google Maps before they disappear!

Somewhere in my pile of files I have a fix back to the old version, but I think Webb may have covered it for you, if not, let us know, or if I can locate it, I'll post it.
The new version of Google Maps is you know what, another fine example of "Just what the stuff are these guys thinking about?" And I often wonder how those minds work.
Accounting software, I had way too much experience tracking it down years ago when at the CPA firm, I gotta tell ya, they oughta try using their own software 20 hrs a week to see what it's like. These days I use Excel (no annual fees or updates!) and have it programmed like it was meant for that purpose, sure saves me a lot of time and screaming. But it's the old MS Excel format, the new MS Excel format is terrible and CANNOT perform like the old. What were they thinking?
And other items which I can't think of right now, all in the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" category.

I'm presently using the "Magic Link" to the Classic Version.....

....but I suspect that the Google Guards are already scouring the Planet Alderon for the address of the wayward internet link, with the intent of closing it down, and removing it from the free world, forever....

Looks simple enough.
It seems that most of us tried that, (I did), and it didn't work. It just repeated the latest version, which we didn't want!
Google stated that the Classic Version was not going to be available to anyone.
We were going to be stuffed with the new version...like it or not!
I've got the Classic version running, but only via the "Magic Address

I dug up this thread because there's some new info I'd like to share with y'awl.
I finally, finally got around to updating my browser. Or trying to. Using Internet Explorer since March 2011, it finally fell apart on a few major websites of mine. So I figured, OK, let's update with the latest IE. It was just rocket science, they wanted SP1, whatever, and other impossible downloading issues turned up. So I tried Google Chrome, that just didn't cut it. Next try, Firefox. Very good. It loaded all my IE bookmarked sites quickly, and finished the whole business in just a few minutes. Learning curve was about 5 minutes, just very user friendly.
> So this now brings me to the subject here: GOOGLE MAPS. With the old IE8, on my system, the old Google Maps was fine. But for some unknown reason, at my bosses computer, with IE11, the new Google Maps had some minor but irritating problems, one of which was that the maps view wasn't showing the street names sometimes, depending on the zoom level, and overall seemed just a pain to use, It got to the point where I would only use GMaps at home.
But on Firefox, Google Maps works well, and I'm now seeing it as good and probably better than the old version of GMaps to the point where I would not go back to the ole version even if I could. I also noticed the TILT feature, essentially a bird's eye view, very interesting. It's in the lower right area. I'm satisfied with Google Maps now. I'm also very satisfied with Firefox. I've noticed one automatic update since I started using it, so maybe Firefox will always be current. There are features in FF that I like a lot, there are none that I do not like.

Only anoying thing with Firefox are some updates: like everything
"improving" (anoying our internet experience with interrupts) what needs NO iMPROVMENT. But they repair their goof soon enaugh, have been using FF for a long time now. Times past
(Windows 95 times), I started using Netscape because it was the only browser with tabs, but it vanished forever. I liked Opera and even had a blog there, but the administrators were very very.. nazis I call them, and you need a NASA degree in electronics to sort out many many inconveniences & nordic quirks. So I went Firefox and life in general became acceptable again. Now I understand that none pof those gOOGLE grievances had ataked me, but took note just in case. Google Maps & Google Earth have been useful for returning to Chevreuse, were we hided after loosing tha war, even found the ruins of our home in the woods. All is in my Blogger
(me do not like the "g+", only have a Blogger profile & a diferent name/profile for my YouTube, to Google's grievance) withch is a kind of biography or life point of view, in Castillian Spanish:

The old Google Maps is in intensive care, and may never recover.
I've been checking out the "other" map programs, one after the other -.
Comparison of web map servicesFor a while I was able to get around the new & improved Google maps, no more.
And guess what - THERE IS NO PROBLEM - NONE.
Not according to Google -
"google map" complaints

I see that Google have extended their power and control and finally stepped on my "Classic Version" of Google Sat Maps!
(I had it specially Bookmarked, but now it only shows the new version).
The original Classic Version was simple and easy, with no unnecessary clutter to fill the screen!...
