Hal Halvorson was a general in the aaf as a C-54 driver during the Berlin Airlift. He saw a group of kids watching the non-stop delivery of flour and other food stuff in 1948 to Berlin after the soviets blocked the train and surface vehicles. I watched a documentary on PBS which laid out how this came about. Truman told Stalin that there were 50 B-29s stationed in England and if he saw fit to shoot down a delivery he would find out the hard way that there would be "consequences". There is no way to describe what little acts of kindness have on people who have lost pretty much all hope.
What he did was drop little parachutes with candy (gum, candy bars, jawbreakers) to the waiting kids outside Templehoff air strip. Even the soviets thought it was a capitalist plot for the hearts and minds of the Germans. <<r <<r <<t
