Well I just experienced earlier this evening something I hoped as a gun owner I would never have to do. While I was asleep a very big bloke started working our apartment lock, dog went nuts, wife woke me up scared to death, and I responded with an empty (intentionally) pistol at my side. Just holding it at my side made a world of difference when I confronted the bastard. All ended with NO drama and no fan-fare. Called the PD and filled them in after the situation was resolved. Wife promptly drew a sketch of the man's face (she is a good artist) afterwords.

Nerves are definitely a little rattled with that....I had a loaded magazine but could not stomach actively threatening the guy with a gun so I just kept the gun empty and pointed it down with the mag visible in my other hand.

You truly have all my sympathy. I know the feeling.

I am an ex South African, where this sort of thing is commonplace... Where more and more "records" are broken every year, all for the wrong reasons.
I (we) have had our house broken into four times, and the last time it was totally cleared out..

It is harrowing, and you end up with frayed nerves for days and days afterwards.
I too used to pack a gun, but I used to hate the damn thing. A thing of nuisance beyond description.
Dreading the day it may actually be needed in an unavoidable situation. (Which, thank goodness, never happened.)
The biggest fear was it being stolen during a break-in, then keeping it well hidden from the kids, then taking it with you on holidays. etc etc

Been living in the UK now for 12 years. Loving it...

Fortunately, for us "non-NRA" folks in Britain, gun crime/use is extremely rare....

..thank goodness...as I watch "Cops Reloaded" on the U.S. 'Tele..!

I dread the time that the policeman/policewoman on the beat in Britain can be seen in the street carrying a gun on his/her waist!!

I'll tell you what...the USA with its constant Gun, Booze, and Drug culture, is a very dangerous place to be!

As I pretend to fly around the U.S.A. in my Flight Sims every day, I'm often very glad, as I read the news, that I don't have to actually land there, in real life!

The scenery is absolutely gorgeous....its just (some/most of?) the folks that live there, that worry me!... ...!

This is for certain what I know, however you THINK you will act, think, and feel during a home invasion while you were sleeping the reality is far far different.

Stay frosty people and keep those guns loaded & in quick reach.

At least get a very loyal dog. They need no reloading and no aiming! Nice to have back-up with sharp hearing and a serious bark.

And to anti-gun/gun control folks, no, us gun owners do NOT like the feeling of pulling a gun on another person. That was not fun and does not feel good...but I am very grateful I had it. Definitely shaken up and can't sleep with thinking about that decision (although it was very right and I will make it again).

I've wanted to return to England, but after reading these stories last year, I've been afraid to.

That a whole country would have to even consider enacting such laws, scares me.


Because of my work, and the areas that I've worked in, I have in the past possessed a concealed weapon permit.

But as I don't drink alcoholic beverages (nor do much cooking where I'd need a large kitchen knife for that matter) I would feel VERY unprotected in the UK.


I did a quick comparison on violence - US vs UK.

I don't think that any of the comparisons are all that useful. The two countries compile their statistics differently.

For instance: In the US, the FBI and the CDC total the number of "gun" deaths. But this figure actually includes "gun" suicides, which is the larger of the two (about 60%).

And as the UK has severely restricted the right to posses a weapon, even in the home, I think that gun violence must be minimal, if any.


To paraphrase Paul - The UK is a great place to fly over, but I wouldn't want to land there.
