Proliferation of cell towers.

Postby Modlerbob » Mon Jun 30, 2014 11:43 pm

Many years ago when I was somewhat active with FS98 and 2000 there weren't many cell towers dotting the landscape. Now they are everywhere. I had a friend at work back in the 1970s and 80s that spent every spare buck he had buying options on cell tower site leases. This was at the beginning of cell phones when they were the size and weight of a brick and everybody thought he was mad. I haven't heard from him in a while but I;ll bet he's pretty wealthy by now.

I'd never heard of a cell tower so looked it up. I thought you meant one of these. http://www.disneypictures.net/data/media/284/Rapunzel_tower.jpg

What you call cell phones are called mobiles where I come from. :) Mobile phone masts

I don't know which looks worse across the landscape. Miles and miles of telephone poles 90 ft. apart alongside the highways with anywhere from one to a dozen cables strung between them or a porcupine network of short radio towers everywhere. As far as that little box that uses them is concerned I too turn mine off when I don't want to be bothered with the outside world.

Yep, phone stuff. Or stuff it, maybe. My cell is with me when driving, only for emergencies, never on. Home phone, the 'Silent' button is a big help. If I turn it off, I screen incoming before answering. I've got it set for 6 rings before the voice mail picks up, that way, a lot of times, any junk calls just hang up without a message. Gotta stay a step ahead of it all.

Mobile phones....

I give up!

Tiny phone with tiny phone numbers which are too small to read.... :? ....

...screen blanked-out in broad daylight...impossible to see anything when you've broken down and need to phone the break-down service for a recovery!.... ....!

Never figure out where the microphone and speaker are... ....

Which way round to speak in it, which is probably why I keep merely photographing my ear when pressing to speak!.... ...!

I love my good, old-fashioned? land-line telephone, with its big buttons, and a proper wired handset!.... ....!

Paul...Mobile phones?.....BAH!.... ....But I like the word; "Proliferation"!.... ...!

It seems as if you are a candidate for what's called the "Jitterbug" with it's big buttons. My cell phone is from Metro PCS. $25/mo. unlimit talk and text, no internet. Everywhere I go I see young people are totally addicted to these things. The car accident that put me permanently in a wheelchair was caused by a teenager trying to text while driving. He lost control of his vehicle and crossed the centerline of the road ramming my car head on.

Some people just have those cell phones glued to their ears, I actually feel sorry for those poor misguided individuals. I spell it right out to all people that have my number you lamelessly, text me with bogus material, call me for no reason, that's it were done, don't ever bother calling again. Phone stays really quite, I'm old school as well, get to the point for the reason you called, or you'll be talking to yourself.

This time of the year I'm always outside anyway and the phone stays in the house, if people need me they just pull up in the driveway (I'll put you to work while we talk). It's like I do things my way or hit the highway. Never been one for idle gossip, life's to short that :)
