Is it possible to install mini-panels with the external view of an aircraft?

No problem at all, but you need to use FSX in "window mode".

Just create another FSX window, drag and drop that window onto another monitor.


These are two 9 inch monitors that I use for instruments, but I could easily drag another FSX window onto one, or both, of them.


BTW - these two are USB monitors. So if you're using a laptop, you could plug them into any USB port.


Windows can recognize quite a few monitors. It's all a matter of how many monitor outputs your video card has.




Side note - It is possible to use other computers connected to FSX. This allows you to have multiple views without running FSX in "window mode". But it might be a little more than you want to do at the moment.

I just used an old picture to show multiple monitors. I was being lazy.

I've done Hawkeye's version in FS9, but it was long ago and I've forgotten exactly how it's done, sorry. I do remember that it takes a bit of doing, by then I had plenty of experience doing stuff like that. You have to set up a separate window in the panel.cfg file, etc.

You might try to locate an aircraft that has a mini panel setup, maybe a default aircraft, and try to figure out how its done, you have to look in the panel.cfg file. It also requires positioning of the gauges in the window. I had plenty of time back when, it takes a while to figure it out and then implement it.

As Hawkeye shows, I suspect it can be done, with an additional "Mini Panel" entry in the panel.cfg file

There is a DLable minipanel for all aircraft, MinipanelIII. The zipfile from here, I think, is FS2004_Minipanel_V3.zip. Best minipanel I've ever seen. And there is a way to make it persistant across all views, ...ummm...Ahhh here it is, add the line

type=special

under the [Windownn] section of the Panel.cfg file, where nn is the number of the minipanel window.
Then hit the Shift+nn for the minipanel anytime you want to see it, whatever view you are in...

You're right Paul! Depending on the aircraft sometimes I use the instruments included with it and other times I'll call up instruments from the main Gauge File. I've even downloaded other aircraft from Simviation just to get the gauges. It's not hard once you get the hang of it. I think it's sort of fun actually.

Its so much fun re-designing a standard instrument panel to suit oneself...and so easy to do!

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but you can also edit the main camera.cfg and change this:

"showpanel=no"

to

"showpanel=yes"

After that, all panels will be usable in those views.
