Goodly morning all...

Had a couple we have known for six decades or more drop in yesterday for tea and desserts.

While the ladies enjoyed their time together talking about crafts we started chewing the rag about aviation.

He flew many types of aircraft prior to retirement from the Royal Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force.

I noticed he was wearing his wrist watch with the face on the underside of his wrist.

Asked him if he got many scratches on the time piece that way, the answer was apparently not.

He has wore a wrist watch that way since flying the Gloster Meteor Aircraft as apparently the watch would hit the Speed Brake Handle on the port side of the aircraft.

I seldom wear a wrist watch now but carry a pocket watch.

Flew with one chap who had his wrist watch strapped to the belt on his pants.

Most men who wear a wrist watch seem to wear it on the left wrist, perhaps left or right handed might make a difference. Ladies I thought wore their wrist watch on the right wrist, however, the Old Girl does wear hers on the left wrist when she wears one.

Gosh forbid, I be the one to tell the Old Girl how to wear a wrist watch...

Sometimes it is best to keep our observations to ourselves so as not to get the look anyone married for any length of time knows this look well as we have all gotten it on at one time or another

A couple of opinions off the internet...

The proper wrist in which to wear a watch will depend on whether you are male or female; if you are a male the proper hand is the left hand and if you are female the proper hand is the right hand. This arrangement will hold regardless of whether you are left handed or right handed.

That might have been the case years ago or perhaps when it's more of a fashion accessory than a practical timepiece. I don't think there are any hard & fast rules these days. Wear your watch whichever way is most comfortable for you.

A sign of the "times"...?
Many people of a newer generation would ask you "what's a watch?"
If you explained it was a device that you attached to your wrist to tell the time, they would wonder how it was possible to strap a smart phone to your wrist, or even why you would want to...!

Since the dawn of common place cell phone use, I personally have not worn a watch. I still have a couple watches. One is a big beautiful piece, steel strap and all. Looks nice on the top of my dresser where it has lived for years since I received it as a gift. My other watch is a $10 walmart special that i bought for outdoor use. My job takes me to the remote reaches of northern canada quite often, where the environment is harsh and cell coverage is nonexistant. I've modified this watch to strap inside my vest where it is protected. It is important to have a good analog watch up north for a couple reasons.

First, you want to be sure you are back at your chopper or plane rendezvous in time to get home before legal sunset, and second, when your gps stops working, the watch can be used as a crude compass to keep you slogging over tundra and through the forests in a reasonably correct direction.

I've always thought, a right hander wears his watch on left hand, and then the opposite!!!
But what do i know these days, i will not be without my Seiko on my left wrist

Time pieces?

...When I am out and about, I just observe the position of the Sun, on a clear day.

If its cloudy, I just stay at home in the warm, and look at the clock on my wall.

Talking about watches or other time keeping devices I have an "observation experiment" for everyone here. The next time you see someone looking at their time piece wait until they put it away, perhaps a second or two. Then ask them what the time is. Almost inevitably they will take their time piece out again to look at it before they answer.

Try it! Then ask them why they did that since they just looked at it a moment ago. Usually you'll get a pretty funny reaction.

Hey, Bass, what time is it?

I always wear my watch on the inside of my left wrist, and I am severly, massively, exclusively right handed It keeps the bangs and scratches to a minimum, believe it or not. But I have an awesome watch. All digital, has a built in compass, and barometric and temperature features! I can tell my current altitude, watch the baro for wx changes, you name it! It's solar charged, battery operated, about 15 min of bright light a day keeps it running nicely!
I also invariably carry a good, milspec type compass, along with a number of other items, when going out for a hike in the woods or whatever. ALWAYS! Toooooo easy to get lost, twist an ankle, whatever, and need to stay for a bit in the woods. Oddly, I have never, to my knowledge, gotten lost, even dropped into a forest I've never seen before. I love the woods!

By the same token, I never, ever wear my watch or wedding ring (only jewelry I ever wear anyway) when working on electronic equipment, or aircraft, cars or other mechanical doohickies. Way too easy to accidentally cause a short, burns (to me!), or deglove my finger, as they call it, ie: catch the ring on something moving or whatever, and tear all the skin and meat off it. Has happened to a number of pilots and maintennance types I know of, while getting in and out of the cockpits of military aircraft. Real easy to miss a step on those boarding ladders, grab for the canopy sill and catch a ring as you go down (shudder!).

I never wore my ring either. My watch was on a cloth type wrist strap which could tear away if I caught it on something.
I had a young aircraft electrician's mate who worked for me "degloved" his ring finger aboard ship when he jumped out of his rack and caught it on one of the bolts that attached the overhead light fixture to the stanchion. Stripped it clean.

Still wear my 30 year old Casio steel case, Analog Diver's watch... on my right wrist, since I write left handed. I have the tan line to confirm it.

I do try to keep my topics somewhat aviation related...

Now I was told many decades ago that during World War One shot down aviators were to save the Aircraft Clock where possible prior to burning the aircraft if they crashed behind enemy lines.

I wonder why the clock was so important?

I could not find anything on the saving the aircraft clock during World War One but there is lots of information on different military clocks and their uses during various wars including prior to World War One.
