Boeing's Phantom Badger packs a lot of combat vehicle into a small package

The GP/Jeep was developed by Willys as a light weight, cross-country reconnaissance/utility vehicle.

It did what it was supposed to do, but decades later the military wanted something better.


Along comes the Humvee.

Well, the Humvee gets used in combat areas (as was the original GP/Jeep) and soldiers get killed, as sometimes happened in a combat area.

The people rose up, and cried out "Our soldiers are getting killed! Why is this vehicle not protecting them!"


People were getting killed while ridding in it because it was an Unarmored General Purpose Vehicle, NOT an APC (Armoured personnel carrier)

So the public demanded an armored general purpose vehicle. Add an extra 1,500 to 2,200 pounds (680 to 1,000 kg) to the vehicle.

Now we don't have a "light weight GP utility vehicle".



Breaking news - We need a "light weight utility vehicle".

Yeah, for some reason the civilian contractors for the military seem to love the word "Phantom" . They stick it to evry thing! Even us lowly tweaks!
If I could figure out a decent solvent, I'd use it....

I bet that engine in the "new" Jeep is a lot more complicated than the original, simple, cheap 'n cheerful, petrol, 4-cycilinder, side-valve engine!...>>>

No doubt, when the bullets fly and the pucker factor rises through the roof, knowing that when you hit "start" and try to put your gas pedal through the floor, the engine will be more than happy to go "VROOM!!"

Simple does it, complicated....not so much!

I can remember all my old Motor Car engines, with their push-rod, overhead valves, normally aspirated carburettors, high-tension spark distributors, electric dynamos, clicking voltage regulators, mechanical/electric diaphragm petrol pumps, etc, were all "fixable" on the side of the road, if they broke-down!
Not the same nowadays, with non-fixable, fuel injection, electronic ignition, and complex Engine Control Systems....

...any problems with any that fancy stuff, in the middle of nowhere, (Death Valley?) and you are in REAL trouble!.... ....!
