For some reason it didn't trigger any alarms when my wife said that she bought more life insurance for me.

A note on Torrey, Box-Death Hollow Wilderness.

If you download ONLY that scenery, there are no airports within that area.

Go to 1L7 and head north after taking off.

Personally, I'm going to download the surrounding areas.

Very dangerous, low flying over mountainous areas...

You would (or would not) be surprised just how tightly I clench my bum whenever flying over the Sierra Nevada mountains in my Cessna 150!
The constant fear of engine, etc, problems, not to mention the high, cold altitude/atmosphere affecting my Carburettor, Pitot Tube.....and my various other bits!... :o ...!

High mountains... and water...things to be avoided in an aeroplane!

Low level meadows and warm sunshine are best... ;) ...!

Not a good situation to be in for sure. Good thing it's a simulator :)

How would you bring it in if you had to.

At my age it's hard to bend over and kiss anything goodbye.

I crashed. :(

BTW - if you download that scenery you'll see that, that isn't the worst area by any means.

I ended up downloading the surrounding areas, and must have spent 4 - 5 hours just flying the area.

It really is an incredibly desolate location.

We all think that we know our own country. But when you see this area you realize how little you do know.

What the heck could have happened to cause this?

This shows the difference between FTX Global and the BlueSkyScenery. (The BlueSkyScenery is at the 1 meter level).

Two very different products that affect, and effect, what we see beneath us.

Most of the time I'm quite happy with FTX Global. But sometimes I'm definitely not.

Between BlueSkyScenery & OZx I'm beginning to like some photo scenery.

Thanks for this comparison, great idea in the same picture!

The only problem with foto is no seasonal textures.

I think there is a lot to be said about Blue Sky Scenery. Blue Sky has been around for quite some time now and they do have geographical areas mapped really well. I really became interested in their scenery around 4 or 5 years ago (maybe even longer), and is very easy to spend hours flying the scenery. I mean here, it goes on and on while your flying a region, from one state to the next in the W/SW of the USA. You can fly all day and never leave the scenery in a Cessna or DC-3. Like you mentioned OldAirmail I wonder how this landscape was formed you were flying over, that's what drew my attention as well to the so many diverse areas.
Many a day I spent flying out of So.Cal (or even Frisco) to Denver in a Cessna, those X'ed out red areas in Colorado currently at Blue Sky, I have those areas archived from the the old Blue Sky site before they changed. So it was on and on flying, and using sectionals along the way I learned a lot about famous landmarks and passes. It was and still is a great area to fly, I won't mention how many times I did the Grand Canyon over the river run from Page Arizona to Lake Mead just outside Vegas using Blue Sky Scenery and a Cessna.
Who knows maybe I'll put it all back in someday. Right now just running FSX scenery, and just 2 or 3 small sea plane bases in Alaska, and that's it since the re-install of FSX.
Blue Sky, that is some pretty good scenery no doubt :)

..and a lot of on-going; "Plate Tectonics", where the West Coast is overtaking the East Coast, causing big and small ridges in the Earth's crust!

My daily Sim flights along the US West Coast show lots of them!

That first shot under "What the heck could have happened to cause this?" looks or like something was dragged through the mud.

You have "walls" on each side of the "trough" that look liked they were pushed upwards.

The real trough runs far out of this picture.

It's hard to think of a river causing that, but what else can it be.

At any rate, the variety of the terrain is fantastic, and BlueSkyScenery makes it very interesting to fly over.

For the most part I much prefer the FTX Global scenery, especially with the new version of Vector.

But as you can see from the last two shots, FTX Global can't compete with BlueSkyScenery in certain areas.

And I wouldn't bet anything that the upcoming FTX Landclass will make any difference in such a unique landscape.

So where as I'll probably not buy any large scale photo-real scenery again, I'll probably transform some of the unique areas using BlueSkyScenery and OZx.

More views

Lots of Variety.

Photo-real, done right, can be MUCH better when done right.
