Goodly afternoon all... <<q

The Old Girl won't let me do a blasted thing but sit here with my broken foot up while she is at church getting saved again.

I am sitting in the solarium which overlooks the Bay of Quinte and the Trent River. I can watch the military aircraft depart and land and the many civilian aircraft that practice approaches.

I counted nearly thirty ice fishing huts on the bay with several on the river. Starting to watch the ice boats on the bay and then it dawned on me, hey there is at least a dozen or so and they are heading towards several ice huts.

Got the binoculars out and started to wonder what Civilian Transport Regulations these guys operate under?
They passed the ice fishing huts by more than a 1000 yards but what speed they had.

Heck, did some ice boating on the river when living on the old homestead but nothing at the speed these folks are going and so close together.

They would be no contest for me and some of the other Old Retired Rocking Chair Flying Geezers in our bugsmashers, bet we could buzz them folks real good...

They disappeared several miles down the bay and being bored again I decided to see what Civilian Transport Regulations these folks operated under.
Figuring they would be under the Boating Section that is where I looked first. Could not find anything unless I missed something.

What I did find was something interesting you folks might like to read:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_boat

Half way down the page you will find something called Land Sailing.

There is some very interesting information on this Link especially a Land Boat that was used in New York City.

Perhaps it is time to get rid of the personal automobile and bring these Land Yachts back...

I don't know for sure but I suspect it's similar to the UK where there are no Legal requirements for leisure sailing. Dinghy sailing, yacht, windsurf, kitesurf, land sailing and power boating are all pretty much unregulated.

There is a governing (training) body over here called The Royal Yachting association who cover all leisure boating activities including power boats but it isn't mandatory to join. In the UK the best way to learn sailing or power boating is to join a club, all of these clubs will be RYA affiliated and offer RYA qualifications. A mandatory requirement of these clubs is personal insurance. In the U.S. you have the American Sailing Assoc who perform broadly similar functions.

....at the end of the day though if folk decide to buy a boat in ignorance and without insurance, stick it on the water and kill someone, they are perfectly able to do so. They're still open to law suits though and the coast guard and RNLI would be more than happy to provide evidence in a private case.

My wife and I sail a dinghy which we race at organised racing events, we even did a world championship a few years back. We are insured and have had RYA training (RYA Dinghy sailing with coastal endorsement Part 1 and 2. Power boat 1 and 2, Safety Boat 1 and 2) . In the UK these training certificates are now considered as professional qualifications............personally I wouldn't go anywhere near the water (or ice) without them but many of the Old Time sailors and independently minded folk (read idiots) think it all a waste of time saying "there's no substitute for experience".

Thanks folks for the replies.

G.K. here one needs a Boating Course and a License.

Heck one even needs a license or permit now to dig a private garbage pit here...
