I have absolutely no desire to answer my door on halloween. Yeah, it's twitter moment, but I hate that day.

Halloween?

I have already set the Bear Trap in the pit just inside my front gate... ....!

What a pair of Humbugs you two are...

The old girl and I love Halloween, we dress in different costumes to greet the children in costume who visit our home for a Trick or a Treat...

The old girl used to make candy and toffee apples but now we give out bags of potato chips and our grandchildren and I eat the candy and toffee apples...

We won the best Halloween Costume at the Royal Canadian Legion Halloween dance many times over the last few decades.

Now as for Christmas Carolers, how could anyone not love to hear Christmas Carols sang by the young and old, in groups or choirs?

Nothing better than sitting around the family piano, organ with a few other musical instruments added in and singing Christmas Carols while the fireplace fire adds a warm glow to the room...

Now keep this in mind gentlemen, I shall start my Snow Dance right after November 11th, Remembrance Day.

Hi Doug. I can only assume that Hallowe'en in Canada is very different to what it is in the UK. Far too many young thugs going round threatening old folks like Fozzer. They're not interested in sweets but want hard cash. "Pay up or we'll smash your windows", that type of thing. Fortunately they know better than to come around where I live.

As for Christmas carollers, what we get is the same young thugs singing one verse of "We wish you a Merry Christmas". They only know one verse & even then get the words wrong. Bah! Humbug!

Paul, when we lived on the old homestead our oldest son now has we were on a dead end road, ending at the Trent River and it was five or almost five miles to the highway. We were the only property on the road and it was a twenty minute drive into the nearest village.

Yes, we decorated our home inside and out, we also decorated the hangar inside and out and I hung Christmas Lights on the barn and my two seat outhouse. I always had an extra Sears Christmas Wish Book for the two seat outhouse to mark in what I wanted for Christmas.

Santa Clause was real good to me every year (well of course I was a wonderful gentleman all year long) and I usually got everything I marked in the Sears Christmas Wish Book/Catalogue...

When we did winter night flights and touch and goes our home looked real nice from the air, lots of other Flying Farmers decorated their strips and properties also.

Everyone pitched in to decorate the Club House at the Bugsmasher Field with lots of new ideas each year...

Doug, we don't seem to have that problem in our area and I do not see any problems on the morning news from other areas including large cities.

I think the reason being is most children under twelve years old have a parent or older student with them.

The Fire Department, Volunteer Fire Department, Police and if on a Military Establishment a group of military people designated to patrol along with the Military Police and I think Fire Department.

I remember one year a group (three) older teenagers were caught on top of a building in the village throwing eggs.

They presented themselves to the Fire Station on the next Saturday to wash Fire Trucks.

Only one mother was furious and made a big fuss, her home was egged... Nope, no sure by who...

There was a problem several years ago with older teenagers smashing pumpkins on front porches, they were rounded up and made to eat some raw pumpkin by the locals. That problem soon went away.

The problem we have today is:
-foreigners coming into this country want Halloween ended as they think it is devil worshipping...Bah Humbug
-the same people do not want schools, school buses, government buildings decorated with Christmas Trees and Christmas Lights as it is a Christian Tradition...Bah Humbug

Last year a school bus operator refused to allow his buses to be decorated at Christmas, bus decorating was done for years with a contest who had the best decorated School Bus. He threatened to fire any driver who allowed the students to decorate their bus.

It caused quite a stir amongst students and parents. Not sure what will happen this year as his reason is not all students on the buses are Christian.

Apparently when the students who were not Christian were interviewed they had no problem with the buses being decorated.

People need to use a little common sense and that seems to be lacking at several Council Meetings...

After the kids were grown and gone (Happy Birthday! You're 18! WTG! Now get OUT!! ) The loverly wifey and I celebrate Samhain our own way, as all should be able to. Same for the Winter Solstice Festival (ie Christmass for you christian types ) It just seems like the slightest chance of possibly offending another religion and BANG, you must be a bigot and not permitted.
Us, we just do unto others etc etc, and for those that want to try and egg the house or demand cash, we have more and better weapons than they do!

All this brings up memories from long ago.

In our area (Long Island, NY back in the 1960's) you would get pathetic "gangs" out on Halloween.

Groups a 3 to 5, so called "tough" kids in masks, would go around "socking littler kids.

"Socking" was when you put chalk powder in a sock. You then hit someone with it. Usually on the back as you ran up behind them. Some would hit the back of the kids head too.

It would hurt some, but cause no damage. Other than leaving a sock shaped mark on the sockies.


Myself and 2 others decided to form a vigilante committee.

One person, who had a car, drove. My friend and I sat in the car with loaded guns.

LOADED GUNS!!!!!

Well, actually, loaded water pistols.

Loaded with the worst cheap perfume we could find!

Locating the kids with the loaded socks was no problem even though it usually wasn't more than 2 or 3 groups.

It's too bad we didn't have Super Soakers back then.


I haven't a clue how they explained their perfume to their parents.

Why not put the actual bear out there? Then you need just clean up after the bear -- he'd have taken care of everything else...
