The guy in the chair is an old friend of mine with what I believe is an unhealthy obsession with firearms (but he's a nice guy).   ::)

I don't know much about baseball but cricket is the nearest British equivalent, not football (soccer). I assume a baseball is similar but the cricket ball is bigger, harder & heavier. Fast bowlers deliberately aim at all parts of a batsman's body & the best can bowl at up to 100 mph. Batsmen have been killed before now by being hit on the head with a cricket ball which led to the introduction of protective helmets, although these are sometimes not much protection. I have no idea how fast a cricket ball can be travelling if it's hit hard by someone like Ian "Beefy" Botham or Freddie Flintoff. Some fielders stand very close to the batsman, hence the expression "silly" for fielding positions in cricket.
The ball is headed in soccer which has been known to cause serious brain injuries similar to boxing.
PS. I checked the weight & dimensions which seem to be much the same. Shows how much I know about baseball. I always thought the cricket ball was harder. A new cricket ball has the consistency of a cannon ball.

Baseball has had the same results: batting helmets have been mandatory for quite some time, now.

No, soccer balls and (American) footballs are not the same. I've played both and a soccer ball hit is definitely the less severe(depending upon who threw the football and exactly how it hits).

well... Over here most people would offer you just a coffee !!  ;D

If I ever were in that situation, I'd really consider offering the burglar a coffee.
Methinks I'd run for the "nicest victim" award then.

I don't know how we got on to this subject in a topic on firearms or how football came into it. I was pointing out that cricket is the nearest equivalent to baseball. I know the American football is different to a soccer ball. (Why do they call it football anyway?) It looks very similar to the one used in Rugby. I've never heard of anyone being killed by a football but you would certainly know it if you were hit in the face (or other sensitive parts :o) from a free kick by one of the top soccer dead ball specialists. Modern footballs are lighter than the old-fashioned ones I used to play with at school. These had a separate internal bladder, rather like an inner tube on a car tyre, inserted through a slit in the outer cover & laced up before being inflated. Heading one of these balls could cause serious injury if the valve or ends of the laces were sticking out  - which was not unusual. They also doubled in weight when wet. It was more like kicking or heading a cannonball.

lol...Is there such a thing as a HEALTHY obsession with firearms then Rich?....commoner ;D

Probably not.  I think you can enjoy and appreciate guns, but I have a couple friends who probably send $1000+ (sometimes a lot more) a year buying guns that really don't have much use hunting use.  It's their choice, but guns seem to dominate a larger part of their life than seems healthy.

Guns are illegal  for "the average Joe" in the UK, I have a crossbow!

I've never used it "in anger" scared the crap out of an attempted burgular with it a year back, I'll never forget his face when I appeared in my back yard with it pointed at him ! - He was trying to burgle my shed, he ran away.....
