No, the flight diverted to Mars was actually a flight that originated in a nebula several light years away.  It wasn't until the Empire...crap, I was trying to avoid any reference to Star Wars today.

damn those plutonians... Why do they send the diverted flights to Maine? why not do what they are gonna do at the flights destination so that all of the other people onboard are delayed?

I think all countries have airports where suspect aircraft are sent. The equivalent to Maine in the UK is Stansted. This stems from the old days of conventional hijacking when there was a very real risk of the aircraft being deliberately blown up on the ground if the hijackers' demands weren't met. The problem now is that the goalposts have been moved. The terrorists we're dealing with don't seem to have any demands & it's impossible to negotiate with them.
