at 69, being from montreal, my favorite memories may be a bit different....the original "orange crush" in a clear brown ringed all the way up, bottle...that was the best drink in the world..i remember when they changed it and went cheap...yuk....used to be able to buy chemistry sets with all kinds of goodies, probably illegal today...how about little tin boats that ran on steam in the bathtub...medicines that came in little cobalt blue bottles...mecca ointment....and later when yo yo's were the craze....throwing hockey cards against the wall...closest to the wall takes all....marbles.....hopscotch and skipping rope....friend's father drove a 1940ish model a ford....making push carts or scooters out of an orange crate, a 2x4, and a pair of metal roller skates...not to forget the handles of course......still remember the sounds of metal roller skates and the clicks over the edges of the sidewalk slabs....simple gillows gliders.....wax lips.... i can still taste them....we used to have little parachutes in a tube where you blew them up and away......oh, and those yummy black balls which changed color as you sucked on them......whell...i could go on, but i better stop, short of a novel.....  :)

We used balloons for the richer, deeper sound. Tied it to one of the forks and gently sqeeze it between the spokes and fork untill it faced forward of the fork.  :)

My rent in the 70's = $15/week; utilities = $0 (included in rent)
Rent now = $150/ per week; utilities = @ $20/week

Heck, I could take a bag or plastic Army men or one with cowboys and Indians in it and keep myself occupied for hours. But it did cost my mom one flower bed.... ;)

A couple of old bed sheets and one picnic table made one heck of a fort.

I would watch Saturday morning cartoons until after breakfast and then, outside I went.

My parents had to drag us (kids) out of bed at 7 am on weekdays.

[color=#000000]I remember Orange Crush in the brown bottles too, short Cokes, metal roller skates, fifteen cent gliders with the metal on the nose, playing marbles for keepsies, and homemade sling shots. And there was a small grocery near the elementary school where they sold Duncan yoyos. I remember a Duncan rep coming and putting on a show with all the tricks, like walking the dog and around the world. That was a big deal for us. I practiced for hours at a time trying to perfect those tricks. But I did not like the three rhinestones embedded in the wood, so I dug them out and sanded the paint off, leaving it natural. I still have that yoyo with the three holes where the rhinestones used to be. Those were the days.

When I was young, some of the most memorable things I did to keep myself occupied actually cost nothing or very little.

Lying down in the grass on the little hill near my grandmothers home with my mom watching clouds. Trying to see different shapes. For someone around 5 years old, this was true entertainment.

Catching lightning bugs was all sorts of fun. Trying to catch grasshoppers.

Fishing with my dad or grandfather.

Sometimes the simpler things in life mean allot more than many might think.

Paul...rounding them all up when its time for Bed... 8-)...!

P.S. ...most of my friends are still imaginary, even now!... ::).... ;).... ;D....!
