Good post  - but I don't use chat rooms. Although I'm safe enough and I'm not bothered on the net I don't like the association chat rooms have.
My sister used to play on horseland http://www.horseland.com/ this is an innocent and fun game where people buy, sell and train virtual animals.

They get very technical on there too making complicated sites  and edits of pics and it is quite clever and my sister became quite a skilled html guru. Ages range from young to old, but the chat rooms are full of people "wanting girls aged 12-14". Suspicious? I'd say so. My sister left.

Its been a long time since i graced an internet chat room, way back nearly 9 years ago. Even then you could still 1 or 2 older guys asking around for girls 12-14.
I don't do online banking or go to strange websites(present company excluded of course)

The only sites now that i actually contribute on, is here, and at vistaoz.org. I don't mind using my name on either of these sites, because I must admit, I'm strangely comfortable with you bunch of clowns.

That said, I have met several wonderful people in person, that I met through the net, and have formed really close relationships with. But we would always meet in a public area, and never give out personal info until we both knew we felt safe. You can never be too careful

For me, it's simple...
I have avoided chat rooms, (MSN, etc), like the plague since I first used the Internet, many years ago...  ;)...!
In real life, I find that most people are rather unpleasant, and most of the time I have no wish to pass the time of day with them... ...!
I carefully choose who I want to speak to, from their general appearance, and attitude...which is not obvious on the Internet... ...!
As you get older, and wiser, you tend to be suspicious of other folks motives to talk/correspond with you...
...and that keeps you safe......!

i admit to using chat rooms online quite a bit, but thats only because i'm an admin on the main one i use, and i have also met a few people of there i.e monkeynana's (vickie) who i was going out with for a while .

i've also got no problems of giving my name out on forums as most of the people i generally fly with a lot or chat to via msn or yahoo  ::) or even go out on long rideouts on the motorbikes  ;D.
but still i'm careful who i meet of the "net" as you never know who it could be or what there intentions are.

Considering I'm a bit isolated even at the best of times, and i don't love you lot enough to travel to wherever in the world you are. i'm quite happy giving out my email address if people wanna chat to me on msn. Its not like its my phone number. I can change my email a lot easier, and make it as private as i want

I've always kept my info under wraps for the most part.  I only chat with MSN, and even then, I only chat with 3 relatives and 2 friends from high school.  The only liability would be my 2 foreign friends.  Meh.  A risk I'm willing to take.
