Yep, anything for a vote. Both for local politicians and for those politicians in other countries.  :-/

True, but there is only so much money available for security and only so much human beings can do. It is always easy being in the Opposition as they say... ;)

Passenger details are already forwarded to US security for vetting before the aircraft enters US airspace. It just means speeding up the process so they can be indentified before boarding the aircraft. Surely this should not be difficult with modern communications & computer systems. It would involve very little cost, if any.

[walking on eggshells]No, it's not even "anything for a vote" anymore.  Those to whom I refer are beyond that point.  They're oppositionists.  Certain people could say today is Wednesday, and those other people would say it isn't.  I can almost understand it if it were for a vote.  But studies (and election results) show that they're in a minority, so it's obviously not gaining them any new fans.  They just don't care as long as they can say no.[/walking on eggshells]

Yeah Scott.

Doug, if it did cost very little - don't you think it would be done?

We live in a free society, in theory anyway. Everyone is entitled to express their opinions & I would fight to protect their right to do so - even if I passionately disagree with them. This is exactly what these terrorists are trying to disrupt & from what I can see they're doing pretty well so far.

With the airline industry in the position that it's in, even a little bit of money (relatively speaking) could seal their fate.

An example, perhaps?

That example would get the thread locked faster than you could spell "terrorism and elections".

There are ways to word it that won't get it locked.   ;)

I'm genuinely curious though of what you mean.  Feel free to PM it to me if that makes it easier.

Fear is a tool used by all politicians in election campaigns. I could show you examples used by the leaders of both major parties in the recent UK General Election. It shouldn't need spelling out.

There is nothing wrong with fact based fear.  Fear is our visceral reaction mechanism to protect ourselves.

It's the fear that is based on lies and hatred that becomes a form of terrorism in itself.

Maybe more contempt than hatred but it's not unknown for politicians to play on the fears & prejudices of the electorate to score points over the opposition. I'm no longer prepared to accept all they tell me & prefer to make up my own mind. They're all the same in this respect & when it comes down to it one is no better than the other. In the same way I don't accept that those in authority are always right.

Back on topic. I sympathise with the security services as they have a very difficult job. I have no idea if they've been successful as their work is not usually publicised. It's quite possible that there's been no serious threat to US security since 9/11 or some could well have been prevented. I really don't know, nor does any other member of the general public. I get the feeling that diverting these airliners is being used for publicity to show the public they're at least doing something.
