End of the world for Holland

The best quote though, Mrs Faile said she was concerned that immigration was pushing the Netherlands, a low lying country protected by dikes and sea walls, beneath the waves.

"They keep letting people in. And then we have to build more houses, which makes the Netherlands even heavier. The country will sink even lower, which will make the flooding worse," she said.

I seem to remember going through something similar in 2000. I seriously think all this Mayan 2012 stuff is simply that way back when, the person(s) working on their calender got to 2012 and said, "That's far enough into the future, let someone pick up where I left off 500 years from now."

I know there is a 7 year discrepancy between the old Gregorian calendars and the calendars of today. We need to add 7 years, so that would make this actually 2015. Seems many people didn't know of the discrepancy, especially the Mayan.

The Y2K bug never surfaced and it looks like we averted yet another doomsday.... ;)

Most current calendars are Gregorian, replacing the not quite extinct Julian calendar, which replaced the Roman calendar; during a 24-year span the latter added a 13th month during a particular year to correct for the 355 days in their normal years.
The Mayans were unaware of these calendars which were of no concern to them; their own calendar was not affected by them and was more accurate to begin with.
