I'd suggest Paul is taking the primary meaning. I'm sure men wore braces for clothing below the waist before orthodontics and cosmetic dentistry were common place.

I suppose that makes sense...Are braces different from suspenders? I used to wear those as a child
They're used for holding your trousers up.
I believe they're called 'suspenders' over here, although more properly applied to the over-the-should harness type to hold up the pants; evidently for older gents who need to be suspended without leaving the rest of us in suspense.***

You can but you kinda have to retrain your lips to play. Luckily marching band season is over for eight months. That means I'll get them off soon after marching band next year.
