This is the FAA approved simulator at our club. It's mounted in an arcade-style cabinet, but the hardware can sit on a desk-top too.. doesn't matter.

This my setup at home...

The only appreciable difference in hardware, is the avionics stack.. and since it barely resembles the stack in a real plane, there isn't much difference in training utility between it and the stack you'd bring up in the sim. Changing/entering frequencies is just a small portion of the "work" involved fying by instrument.

The appreciable difference in software however, is that MSFS is far superior to what's run on the approved simulator.

I've used both setups quite a bit (as have several of my club members/pilots/students/instructors).. and they agree. All said and done, my setup is better for teaching instrument flying.

And.. even if you don't use a yoke/pedals.. the whole concept of holding altitude/airspeed (and not turning upside down) when there's nothing in front of you but "white".. absolutely no visual references.. gets drilled home and it's quite challenging to get to your destination with no GPS and no Auto-pilot.

If you can find your way to the intended runway in the sim.. you could sit right seat and navigate for real..

Here's a thought:
It could be said accurately that MSFS is a simulation that can be played like a game.
But I wouldn't say it's a game that can be used as a simulation.

In the end, of course, the  preferred label depends on the  preferred use.

I only wince at the term "game" being used to describe MSFS because I'm usually certain that users who think of it as a game are missing so much of it's potential.

I do as well, I even use kneeboards too. ;)

What I'm impressed with though is using your flying headset as your computer headset as well.  I think I've seen adapters you can buy to do something similar, is that what you did Brett?

I searched high and low for an adapter. The problem plug is the microphone (smaller one). The "ears" plug is a standard audio size, so a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter was the answer.
For the microphone I had to use a "raw"

...what I find, is that whenever a heated discussion occurs over whether or not MSFS is a serious "Simulator", or just a video "Game", I shut down my "Serious Flight Simulator" and load up one of my zillions of favourite "Fun Video Games", and enjoy myself in another "World  of Amusement"... ;D...!

...perhaps there is a time and a place for everything...;)...!

For me, it's fun and enjoyment, in whatever I do... :-*...!!

...(sometimes, Sex is an alternative).... [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]......(I should be so lucky?)... :'(....!

LOL... ;D...!

LOL, Paul   ;D ...

I forgot the original post. I was just chiming in on why MSFS is indeed more than a game..

I probably spend more computer recreation time playing Day of Defeat, than I do simming.. so in no way am I "down on video games"..  :)

For the microphone I had to use a "raw"  1/8" male plug; soldered two wires with aligator clips to it until I could get the female mic jack to make my own adapter. Avionics shops tend to stock the female jack, but not the male plug.. They're impossible to find..

It's an odd size that most audio/radio shops call, "old telephone jacks".. as they are the size used in the old switch-boards (remember operators having to "plug" you into the person you were calling ?   lol)..

Is that a straight adaptor, no electronics? what about operating voltage?

The difference between simmers and gamers is probably the same difference between surfers and sailors.......dude

Matt

You mean one is generally obnoxious and elitist, and the other is fairly laid back and pleasant?

Yeah, I'd say that was about right. ;D
