Meth as in Crystal-Meth, a very dangerous drug popular with hard core drug addicts. Considered to be the most dangerous at the present time because of it's addictive quality and effects over long term use.

If you've ever seen a pic of a long term meth addict it's not a pretty site.

There was a report long ago about a drug addict, who was so doped up, that he even cut out his own face [while awake] and fed it to his dog.

Now, if you think that was grewsome to post about, wait till you see the picture of the addict [without his face]. ::)

Your right Doug - thats that Mr Fosbery leading me astray again ::)
My statement still stands - he' still an idiot for ingesting a lethal dose of anything, be it drugs or booze. You'll probably find that he was wanted for a lot more than just shoplifting.
Peruse your post again, TSC, and see how it reads. I give Foz (amongst everyone else and, now, you) a jab on occasion but I've never called him an idiot (or a shoplifter).  :o ;) ;D 8)

Look on the flip side of this whole event if the idiot survives he'll go to prison. In prison he'll learn something very important in English grammar! Namely that fist can be a verb ;)

(Shrug) Keep in mind that cops are people too - they make the odd mistake; brought on by stress, repetition or sheer bloody boredom.

In England Meth is relatively new to the junkies so there arn't all that many out there which is why most Englanders havn't heard of it. Unlike America where I hear it's quite a problem now.

CraigL: You weren't totally specific there. They didn't search him; you were clear on that, but did they handcuff him? Also I'm curious as to where you live - Birmingham as in England or Alabama? This incident looks like a prime study case for me, if you don't mind

I did say that they hadn't cuffed him.
There was no excuse for not searching or cuffing him. The guy was not high in any way. And we had him secure in an office out of the publics eye. The two cops were pretty big guys, my manager as I said is a big guy so there was little worry about him causing problems. The fact he wasn't cuffed is why this guy is now in hospital. I live in Birmingham England. ;) And the guy was allowed to walk out of the store smoking as he went.

I've been told our region is the meth capital of the country, but I think it's high everywhere, and not just here

It's reached epidemic levels in the midwest-Iowa, Michigan, etc.  It's absolutely atrocious the levels of usage, and it's getting worse.  Meth junkies are some of the worst shells of people you will ever lay eyes on.

To reiterate, for a cop, it is never, ever, under any circumstances, ok to not search someone you are aprehending.  They will be riding in the backseat of your car. In this case, un-handcuffed.  It isn't just SOP, it's common sense.

Here in the US, I believe that law enforcement personel are required to hand cuff a person who is being arrested, regardless. I've even heard that even if a person was to get arrested while inside a police department, he/she would still have to be hand cuffed

This is just what I've heard....

As a Brit I can fairly say I think the US police have the right idea - and that on a lot of issues.

Actually what you said was "Only instead of doing the job right, handcuffing him and searching him they just put him in the back of their car and off they go."

Sorry to be totally anal about it; but there was just enough ambivalence in the statement for me to ask - the sentence does say they neither handcuffed him or searched him, bit ut could be taken to mean they didn't do both - i.e. they did one or the other.
Lol - like I said, totally anal; but one learns to think in such terms after a while.  ::)  ;D

After your correction I agree with you 100% about it being a total screwup; and furthermore point out the error I made with the drugs: he was carrying - not high so drugs wouldn't have been a factor as far as the cops were concerned - until they searched him. Sorry about that. :)
I would love to see that police report for their side of it though...
