That's weird... commuting trick-or-treaters!  I'd say the parents are a little out of line (especially the double-parkers who are tossing litter on the street and not policing their kids!), but I dunno, if it were me I'd probably grin and bear it- it's a special night for the little ones, who are totally innocent in this caper.
And yes, you can pretend you're not home, or even put up a friendly sign saying you're not participating.
Easy for me to say that, though- nobody comes trick-or-treating around here... but now that about fifteen 3-family houses have sprouted next door, that could change next year...  ::)

We had one group of trick or treaters last night! It's a miracle. I think my plan of turning the lights off worked. Was fun though, discussing different ways of scaring the living s*** out of people with my friends :P

Oh well, more sweets for me!

Rotty - that's called "casing" or "surveillance".  Of course we're going to come in with our POS cars (you don't think I'd drive around in my Jaguar S-type, do you?)

Obviously, what we're really doing is casing the houses, sizing them up so we can later go into the neighborhood and really spook them ...

Sheesh....

Had ten or so last night. Never done it myself - it was never something done by my parent so why should they pass on a (non-English) tradition to me...

I'm not picky, I'll eat pumpkin pie when ever and where ever I find it. I don't need a holiday to pig out.... ;D

Innocent? American tradition? a) Candy and fun as a motivation dont justify anything. b) Sucha  stupid tradition should really be reconsidered and c)  Carving a lantern out of a pumpkin? Ok, no. Let it stay in the New World- and why the hell would you carve a latern out of a pumpkin? WTF.
Secondly, the whole Trick or Treat thing roughly translates into:

I think you're missing the point Andrew. From what I can make out complete strangers are driving to various neighbourhoods to carry out this trick or treat nonsense. It might be different in the US but here in the UK a bunch of teenagers dressed in masks ringing on your doorbell after dark can be quite intimidating, especially to older residents. These things are fine if they're properly supervised & involve young children as they were originally intended. It was reported on the news only yesterday that a man was shot on his doorstep after opening the door to "trick or treaters". http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/low/england/merseyside/4395350.stm

I think shooting someone over a mini-Milky Way is a tad excessive myself, I'd stab them instead ;D

It seems a tad strange to me that parents these days do all they can to warn their young children not to take sweets from strangers or even talk to them. Then on one day in the year they actively encourage them to go around knocking on the doors of complete strangers demanding treats with the implied threat of an unspecified "trick" if they don't get them or are unsatisfied with what they're given. I'm told the trick varies from something relatively harmless to throwing eggs or even bricks at the victim's property or even worse. The proxomity of Halloween to Bonfire Night means that fireworks are readily available & cases have been known of these being posted through people's letter boxes with the real risk of fire or serious personal injury.

Unfortunately we suffer from enough vandalism without actively encouraging it. This tradition might be fine in the US as they're used to it but I think it should remain there where it belongs.
