Not sure I've seen it all the way through. Although I'm one of his biggest fans I don't think it was one of Peter Sellers' best films. :-/ Comedy is a very personal thing.

PS. Does it feature aircraft? I really have no idea. ::)

I cant help but notice that nobody has mentioned "Iron Eagle" or "Iron Eagle" 2 through 8 or however many they released straight to video.

SAC was pretty good, just enough to let the Soviets know what the B-36s and B-47s could do...

Those movies were at least as bad as "Pearl Harbor". "MiG-23 inbound!" -> Close-up on the enemy Mirage III.  :-/

One example that springs to mind is Strategic Air Command starring James Stewart.
The Bridges at Toko-Ri is a fine example of US carrier-based operations during the Korean War.

Both are fine works .....good recommendations Doug !

Pearl Harbor was less of an airplane movie and more of a love story.

Midway was cool

The Right Stuff was cool (ill have to see it again)

Memphis Belle was great

Top Gun was cheesy

Tuskeegee Airmen was great

No one has mentioned The Aviator.  I thought it was an excellent movie that truelly showed the spirit of Aviation like it was before GPS, plexiglass cockpits, and the FAA

If you like Sellers, you owe it to yourself to watch the whole thing. He plays 3 different characters, and does a fine job. That movie's one of my faves...LOL!! And while it doesn't feature aircraft per se, there's a few scenes that take place inside a B52 (Slim Pickens' exit is hilarious!!)

Another movie that is not about flying, but has quite a bit of it is "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" from the 60s. Just saw it on PBS the other night...LOL!! There are some very funny sequences with a very decrepit biplane (Jenny, I think) and a very sharp Beech 18. I wonder if they really flew that Beech through a trick (paper) billboard? It doesn't look like a model shot. Likewise the shot where it comes crashing thru the terminal window while taxiing...

I think my all-time favorite aviation movie is Twelve O'Clock High, its just a classic!

Others I think are right up there are:
The Flight of the Phoenix (1965 version, not the new one)
Memphis Belle
The Right Stuff
The Blue Max
Midway

That's because the topic is "BEST aviation movie".

I haven't seen many of the older films mentioned so I should comment.  I did enjoy "The Right Stuff" and "Memphis Belle".

I've seen "Final Countdown" and it was interesting, but it was just typical Hollywood schlock.  Unfortunately I'd have to put "Top Gun" in the same category.  Not only is the story line typical Hollywood, but they even went so far as to use the F-5 as the dreaded enemy Mig.  Oh well, I guess there's only so much they could do.  It was the cold war after all and Migs weren't as plentiful in the free world as they are today.  I'd also have to put "Flight of the Intruder" in the same category.  Lots of nice visuals in both movies, but overall they were very "Hollywood".

My favorite aviation movie though is definately "Airplane".

And I want to see "Aviator" but I have a hard time watching Leo DiCapitated.
