You can crash into rising ground (or a cliff in the most extreme case) in level flight or indeed climbing...

I've seen plenty of aircraft damaged while on the ground. Some were complete write-offs.

Actually I think most planes crash while on the ground.  They're perfectly fine while in the air, then the ground intervenes and BANG! they're damaged while on the ground.

Granted some do get damaged while still in the air.  Flight 800 comes to mind.  But for the most part I think the ground causes the crash.

Reminds me of the old saying: it's not the fall that kills you, it's that sudden stop at the end.
