Firefox doesn't show the url because Firefox did away with the status bar. You can get an extension that puts the status bar back or use Pale Moon.

Aside from the heavy drug usage by the girl, this may not be a case of the stupids.

Think about it. How many 20 to 25 year olds actually put a stamp on an envelope? They all grew up with email, texting, and sexting.

What's a stamp ???

Yeah, she probably put her e-mail addy instead of a stamp. O by the way did you hear the latest blonde joke? Lost her head taking a selfie in a Paris apartment.

With all the doomsday talk about one thing or another, it really gets me how Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO) can still be sold on the open market!

These are just some of the things about DHMO that most people don't know!

Dihydrogen monoxide:
* is easily changed to hydroxyl acid, and is the major component of acid rain.
* contributes to the "greenhouse effect".
* may cause severe burns.
* contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
* accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
* may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
* has been found in tumors.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
* as an industrial solvent and coolant.
* in nuclear power plants.
* in the production of styrofoam.
* as a fire retardant.
* in many forms of animal and human research.
* in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
* as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.

If you should encounter this substance:
AVOID INHAILING
KEEP IN TIGHTLY CLOSED CONTAINER (DANGER - this substance can, and will, eat through certain metals.)
DISPOSE IN ACCORDANCE WITH ALL APPLICABLE FEDERAL, STATE, AND LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS.

Even small amount of this substance can cause planes to crash when mixed with avgas.

I don't want to say more. Unlike our high school students, some terrorists can read.

I've never heard of DHMO causing burns but I suppose at the right temperature anything would.

Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.

Thanks, Jim.

Reading on that site uncovered more supposedly "safe" uses.

I'd forgotten the part about daycare centers using it for disinfectant purposes. :o EVEN ON BABIES!!!!!

If we could stop the sale and use of Dihydrogen Monoxide, the military industrial complex would grind to a halt!

Sometimes I despair though.

But that's big business for you. They'll sell the stuff to anyone

Oh it's too late. It's all over the middle east now.

And the Saudi regime is producing it inside of a nuclear power and desalination plant.

Shipped out as common water, of all things!

But once the terrorists dehydrate it, they're left with a concentrated DHMO powder. Odorless. Tasteless. And completely undetectable by most labs around the world.

I generally like arstechnica, but sometimes I think that the writers need adult supervision.

OK, here's the headline and a picture showing just how bad it is.

Ocean levels in the Philippines rising at 5 times the global average

Image

No doubt about it, THAT is bad news! Five times!!! :o

"Globally, sea levels are going up, but there are big regional differences."

The article uses the usual buzzwords and lots of scientific sounding gobbledygook. You really have to pay attention to what's being said.

1) Satellites are used for measurements.
"Data collected from monitoring networks can be used to probe the mechanisms of sea level rise. In this investigation, scientists used satellite data from April 2002 to June 2014"

"The team separated the sea level rise into several components: heat-driven expansion; glaciers and ice sheets; water movement, distribution, and quality (hydrology); and the rise of land as the glaciers above it melt off. They analyzed the sea level budget both globally and for a number of coastal areas."

Impressive. :snooty:

2) The ocean is getting HIGHER!
"Using their methods, they found that the global sea level rose by 2.74 ± 0.58 mm/y over this 12-year period."

"In addition, this contribution is twice as large as the value estimated using data collected from the uppermost 1,500m of the ocean." OMG!!!!!

Twice as large! :o Ummmm. What happened to that "Ocean levels in the Philippines rising at 5 times the global average."

Oh well, that doesn't matter. If you look at that picture you can understand just how bad the situation is.

The short version

By now people are starting to fall asleep, so I'll be brief.

Over a 12-year period, using satellites, they have determined that global sea level rose by 2.74 ± 0.58 mm/y.

For those who aren't millimeter inclined, that's about one tenth of an inch.
Image

Another way to look at it, 2.74mm, or 0.1 inch, is about the thickness of three sheets of printer paper.

That thickness is being detected on the surface of an active ocean via a satellite. Sure.

One tenth of an inch, per year, couldn't be detected over 12 years on the surface of the water. Way too many variables.

FUD

I suppose that these two scientists are discussing the one tenth of an inch flooding problem.

Image

There is more like that in the article, but this is already too long.
