Why are we doing this to free up space ?

Probably to ease it up for members with a slower connection.

I'm reasonably sure mine is alright. I read the rules first  ;)

Correct.  We need to make sure the forums stay nice and speedy for our members with dial up connections, especially if someone with a large signature does multiple replies in one thread, that thread could take forever to load.

It's just a courtesy for our members with slower connections.  The guideline has always been there, but we are noticing a trend of members ignoring it, so it's time to address it  :)

22k? I know what that's like... :-[

But I hope the mods enforce the rules, not that they havn't, but it seems that too many people simply don't care anymore. I've lost count how many times I've mentioned to someone that their avatars or signature images are breaking forum rules, and people either continually ignore me, or get extremily defensive about it

Or hover over the image in your documents before you upload it to see if it is too large.

Stop the problem before it happens. That's gotta be a motto for something out there.

You would think it's simple, but there are a lot of people who completely disregard forum rules, and I've met some who are convinced that the forum/image rules don't apply to them...

You can be sure that anyone choosing to ignore the size limits after the 9th, won't be forgetting them anytime soon afterward. ;) ;D  :-X
