..another question....

"Washington"

When someone is going to "Washington", or mentions "Washington", how do we know whether they are referring to The State of Washington, or the Capital; Washington DC...(District of Columbia)...?

Same name, two entirely different places in the U.S.... ::)...!

Paul The Confused... ;)...!

Washington would be the state. I believe Washington DC is generally referred to as DC.

I suspect these are British newscasters Paul. I don't watch TV so I wouldn't know where they're talking about. :P

There is more than one place named Washington in the UK. One is a small village a few miles from where I'm sitting. http://www.washingtonvillage.org/

Yep, Washington DC is generally just referred to as DC, but it still can very easily cause confusion during conversations even for people that currently live in the US.

Example:

Guy 1: "Hey, I'll be going to Washington next weekend!"
Guy 2: "Cool, have fun in Seattle!"
Guy 1: "Wait...what? .....nooo....DC!"
Guy 2: "Oh...."

And of course, you throw in West Coast terms versus East Coast terms into the mix, and you never quite know what anyone is talking about.

That's easy...
Whenever someone who is not from the state of Washington goes there, they are going to the city of Seattle. So they say "I'm going to Seattle".

Don't worry... government statements or world news items will never say "Washington" in reference to the state unless it's about Bigfoot. ;D

You have to go to Seattle first, see, because every other town in Washington is accessible only by oxcart.  ;D

Hey, just because there's lots of farmland.... ;D

True, you will rarely ever hear Washington state mentioned in national news, media, ect. The Pacific Northwest is usually either ignored or flat out forgotten by the rest of the country. And if you come to Washington, the east side is ignored and forgotten by Olypmia, and the west side of the state where the majority of the population is... ::)
In Idaho, the same thing occurs with the northern Panhandle. I know a lot of people who would be happy If the Government were to create a new state with Eastern Washington and North Idaho... ;D

Now if we can get all the Californians to move back south... ;D
