Why do i get the impression this has only just started happening in the US? Or has it been happening for years? I realise your prices are going up, but we in the UK have had silly prices for years thanks to our government...

Having worked for some years in the haulage industry, this activity is RIFE and  always has been. Many a morning i woke up to find my small (in HGV sizes anyway) tank with its lockable cap smashed off and a quantity of diesel 'missing' and theres no driver i didnt know who it hadnt happended to.....and some trucks carry serious amounts of diesel, not just 70-80 litres.

Ive heard stories you wouldnt beleive about fully loaded flatbed Scanais having not just the diesel stolen, but the whole tank requiring the vehicle to be lifted up or the side crash bars removing in the middle of the night

Tragic...
Her death was unforeseeable...  her son's demise was not: an outright hit-and-run.

It hasn't -- it's just that, in the past, they usually took the vehicle with it. ;)

I often wonder, during moments of quiet contemplation, if the World has always been full of R-Soles, thieving and otherwise...

...or whether is it a recent phenomenon, afflicting society in general?... ::)...!

No need to wonder: just referencing the multimillennia-spanning Judeo-Christian Bible as historic rhetoric is rather confirming. Even if its events were all fiction, such thoughts had to be in the brain from somewhere just to write them down; governed nations seem to have arisen from bullies and thieves.
