I just cant understand it either.  The place is almost exactly 4 miles from my current location and I live somewhat towards the middle of town.  I could see if it was using a local server but its not.  Same phone lines, same company, and its coming from a source 30 miles east of here.  I cant see why it should matter if its just outside town or not.  But their dial up service runs about $12 a month for 56K...$3 difference for 13x less >:(  Great company and service and never experienced any down time in the almost 2 years I've been with them...but I can get dial up from another company for about $6 a month so Verizon wont be getting my money anymore ;)

Hey Foz, your modem is external right? Have you reset it yet. Sometimes my DSL gateway seems to get "clogged" and a restart dumps the garbage and all is well again. Might help.

Paul ..... unfortunately you are in the same position as everyone else in rip off Britain.

I've gone back to BT as my ISP simply because I became tired of complaining to two different companies in order to get anything sorted when problems arise, each blaming the other.
I'm paying for  up to*8Mb/s from BT ..... actual speed is averaging around 5.1Mb/s.... I am less than 100yds from the exchange .... so still getting ripped off.

* thats the get out clause.

Ok, usually (on all that i've had anyway) there is a reset button somewhere on the thing. On most it's hidden, just a small hole like the emergency eject button on cd-rom drives. For some reason I was unable to open the user's manual PDF doc. on the site you linked, so I don't know if yours has one or not.

Short of removing and re-installing the drivers for the modem, I'm out of ideas.

Triple_7 and Esselbach,

I'm in the same boat, only I live inside of the city limits! I think that it has to do with the type of phone lines. Since I've never had highspeed internet, I know next to nothing about it, but I think that it requires fiber-optic lines. My area, and probably your areas too, are still on the old copper lines, so they actually can't run DSL service through them. It would be expensive for them to replace all of the phone lines, so phone companies won't do it unless there is a big demand for it. In my case, not only am I stuck with dial-up, but abnormally slow dial-up at that. I could live with it if it at least went at regular old dial-up speeds, but it doesn't. I haven't downloaded anything in about a year. ::)

Getting 2.6megs here in Inverness. The one before my Dad was on (just a few weeks ago) was a lot less, just over 1 meg. The one I get in Aberdeen is about 2.5 I think.

The current DSL here still runs though the old copper lines.  Theres no special lines for now.  Now eventually there will be.  Fort Wayne Verizon service is already running Fiber Optics.  They can have not just the internet and phone service but TV as well though them.  It will probably be a few years before fiber optics come to this area.  Its just that they don't want to offer it for some reason.  Theres no special setups or anything, its no farther from the source but they refuse to offer it.  So unless something changes I'm going to enjoy my couple weeks I have left of 768k.  After the move I will be stuck on 56k if I even decide to get it at all.  May just put all accounts on suspend and wait things out.  Might only be at the new location a month or two anyways....since theres no highspeed access I really don't see a point in paying the extra $60 just for them to run a line into the house...(newly built, old phone line is junk.)  So might just have to do without for awhile.  Will see when the time comes :-/

There's soposed to be a huge campaign to get people the speeds they bought.

I have 8 or 16mb broadband thanks to my loving BT provider, but after countless tests I rarely get about 2mb... bit of a pity.

So yeh, contact the provider and tell them that you bought a service that you aren't being supplied... They are meant to be giving you a service which you bought and they aren't keeping up their end of the deal.
