[quote]Nowhere in the article does it say anything about her not wearing a seatbelt.

Everything usually has a down side. Now I'll provide a little, factual story that would fit into a comedy movie.

I once downshifted, slowing to less than 20mph (in a 40) to make the S-turn across a small bridge in the rain. Exiting the bridge and just rounding the corner, I pulled back on the stick to change gears -- the shifter knob came off in my hand! Quickly trying to push it back on, I hit a bump in the road and my arm proceeded down the length of the shifter stick (Ok, now you know what I had up my sleeve), my seat belt doing little more than slowing down the process.
Now I'm face-to-face with the lower dash, can't see but a portion of sky outside, but the rumble beneath me let me know that I'd just gone off the road. Yanking the wheel and pulling myself up off of the shifter brought my plight into view: I was now headed onto the wrong side of the road with another vehicle approaching -- no time to pull back in time. As I allowed the car to continue across the road, I unbuckled the seat belt and jumped backward, landing in the back seat just about the time my car impacted with the rock hillside.
The damage wasn't as great as it could have been, much due to slower speed, and I probably wouldn't have sustained any injury if I'd remained buckled in, either. However, I was the driver; a passenger doesn't definitely know what the driver is going to do until the driver's doing it. This cuts down on any possible reaction time, assuming a passenger would even have any. Faster speeds make matters worse.

There are occasions that a seat belt will actually cause injury or death but the idea is to increase safety. If a driver wants to endanger their own life, that's one thing; when they're out on the public roads, there are others to consider. Although NH doesn't require a buckled belt on anyone over 18, I often buckle mine; if I have a passenger I expect it worn (mine, too) for their better safety. If a meteor drops in on us, however, it won't much matter.

I hope this girl has insurance. I spent just 26 hours in a hospital last August. The bill came to almost $13,000. My insurance paid all but less than $1,000 of it. I had the money squirrled away in a medical savings account from a previous job, so it was no direct hit on my wallet. Still, it was a shock that so little time in stir cost so much...

I wish her well in her recovery...
emachines T6212; AMD Athlon64 3800+ (2.40 GHz; Venice core); Allied AL-B500E 500W power supply; 2048Mb PC3200 DDR400; Westinghouse LCM-22w2 wide-screen LCD monitor; eVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO X16 PCIe video card; Logitech Extreme 3D Pro flight controller;<

H

Having had my share of moving violations which landed me into traffic school, I've heard many highway patrol officers address the subject of not wearing seatbelts helped matter in a traffic accadent.
