I know what you mean - as a criminal she is just a criminal as any other Tom, Dick and Harry and should face the same punishsment. However, being a world-famous playboy model who has starred in porn films she's gonna end up pretty well abused as was mentioned.  It is the responsibility of the prison service to ensure that does not happen. That includes carefully selecting who she is placed with in her cell and ensuring she is in the position to defend herself being more vulnerable. I'm not one for defending criminals, but I do defend the actions taken on this case.

Haven't read all of your posts, but i think I can guess the contents...and I think its really sad and wierd. Why don't you leave the girl alone, what has she ever done to you?

In my opinion you are just jealous because she has more money than you...

I agree she did wrong, and should be punished like everyone else...but the way everyone blindly wants her to suffer...jealousy :P

Sheriff Joe Arpaio offered to house her in his famous Maricopa County Jail.

Paris Hilton would have been in pink underwear and jail stripes if Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio had his way.  On Monday America's toughest sheriff made headlines when he offered to house Paris Hilton in the heat of the Arizona desert and she would be doing manual labor on chain gangs if she were to volunteer for such duty.  Right now 'tent city' houses about 300 female inmates.  Temperatures soar over 110 degrees in Central Arizona in the summer ...

But alas it looks as if Paris Hilton will get a pass.  According to local officials from Phoenix, Sheriff Joe has been turned down.

To me?  She's done nothing.  But she's clearly endangered the good folks of California by driving drunk.  Her license was suspended and she drove anyway, twice.  Now she's going to jail.

So, if a fellow citizen drives drunk and endangers the public then ignores their punishment why should I want to leave well enough alone?  Shouldn't I be pleased to hear that such a person is going to jail?

The thing that really makes this one interesting is that it's Paris Hilton.  Not only is she famous, she's famous for having the most bratty, self centered personality in the world, and it's her personality that's landed her in jail.  Why did she ignore her license suspension?  She didn't think she needed to follow the law because she's important, famous, and better than you.  That's why.  And that's why this case is interesting: she fought the law and the   ...  law won.

Here in the US, the authorities tend to want to make life difficult for drunk drivers.

What pisses me off is that Kathy Hilton sent a letter to Barbara Walters saying how Paris was doing the right thing, and that hopefully this will be a good lesson for girls that look up to her.

Look up to her?  For what?  Being a talentless, spoiled brat, who happened to be born into a wealthy family?  They disgust me.

First, I'd like to say that I know the legal system from the inside.  I've spent the past five years fending off the legal system of the US of A.  I've spent time in jail AND prison, and we should lay down the ground rules about what we are discussing.

First: Paris Hilton is NOT going to prison.  She is going to spend time in COUNTY JAIL.  No one in the US goes to PRISON for 45 days.  It takes that long to process you into the system, so she will be spending her time in a county jail and mostly doing a lot of reading.

County jail is far different from prison.  All offenders are grouped together.  Granted I have spent all my incarceration time in the Texas legal system, but it differs very little from most of the other states, when it comes to "minor" crimes.

Take Hays County Jail, Texas.  I have done several stints there, under different auspices at different times.  For the most part, county is not the same deal as state pen (penitentiary) or state jail.  No one gets raped, no one gets severely beaten, and NO ONE DIES.  If Paris had committed her crime in Texas, she would most likely be sent to a county jail to serve 3 months (90 days) instead of 45 days.  If I (on probation) had committed the same crime (driving under the influence and breaking probation) I would not post on this site again for several years.

Paris is one of the ELITE of this country (a tragic irony) and is not subject to the same laws the underclass is.  You must understand that if someone has a connection that can throw money at a problem, that problem will diminish or go away as needed.  Paris finally made her father angry and he took action: allowing her to reap the "benefits" of what she did.

Never underestimate the power of high influence.  Paris is one of the high-born of our society, the social elite, or the "royalty" if you will.  No harm will ever befall her, and she will NEVER experience the true nature of the legal system as long as she lives.  End of story.

Thanks for the explanation over the different systems that you have. To the rest of the world, you are behind bars, it is prison nothing more, nothing less. In the UK we have prisoner categories, A, B, C, D which equate to the following:

Men's prisons

A Category A Prison is a maximum security prison, highly secured, and used mainly for high risk offenders such as murderers, serious sex offenders and terrorists.

A Category B Prison is for prisoners who do not require maximum security, but for whom escape needs to be made very difficult, either because they would pose a threat to themselves or society, or because they have a high likelihood of attempting to escape.

A Category C Prison is for prisoners who cannot be trusted in open conditions but who are unlikely to try to escape.

A Category D Prison is for prisoners who are trusted enough to wander freely but must show up for daily roll calls.

Women's prisons

Category A prisons are the same for serious female offenders, but for other women prisoners categories B and C are closed for prisoners who cannot be trusted in an open prison, and open for prisoners who are trusted enough to wander freely, although as with the men's prison regime, they must show up for daily roll calls.
