I would assume in the US that the victim would have been arrested and charged for beating up those poor little children.  There was a case back in the 1980's where some guy on the subway was confronted and threatened by a group of teens weilding sharpened scewdrivers.  The victim in this case was legally licensed to cary a firearm, and shot and killed one of the assailants.  I believe he ended up in jail for his actions.  In the US the only victims seem to be the ones who initiate the violence.

None of them died, he was acquitted on attempted murder charges, but did some time for illegal gun possession (no carry permit, and I believe the gun was bought on the black market).

The problem I have with the Goetz thing is that his response to being threatened was to whip out a .38 and unload it in the kids' general direction inside a subway car with something like two dozen people there. It's a miracle nobody else was injured.

Seemed to me he was clearly going around with that weapon just waiting for an excuse to use it... just an angry, frightened nerd on the brink.

But what's kind of pathetic about the legal response was that a civil suit was filed for "emotional distress" by one of the victims... Goetz went  too far, but I'm not very sympathetic to their side either; what they did was very wrong.


I like the idea of lashing for such offenses... pain drives a point home better than most other things.
