The police don't search if they feel they don't need to, they obviously thought you had got everything off him that he might have nicked.

Yeah, the police made a mistake in trusting the CraigL and his boss had done a thorough job of handling the fellow...  ;)

I think you & Foz have the wrong idea. From what I can make out a 'bag of meth' is not methylated spirit.

Drugs isn't it Doug? An overdose of amphetamines?  ??? Looks like he might have tried to use it as a suicide pill.

Your right Doug - thats that Mr Fosbery leading me astray again ::)

My statement still stands - he' still an idiot for ingesting a lethal dose of anything, be it drugs or booze. You'll probably find that he was wanted for a lot more than just shoplifting.

Cheers,

Leading people astray is one of his hobbies. ;)

Craig didn't elaborate but I imagine he was trying to conceal the evidence by swallowing it. ::)

Yup meth-amphetamines Ben/Doug.
those who say the cops were going on the assumption we had searched them, No, we are not allowed to do a full search, we are allowed to take back store property in this case the whiskey that was visable. Thats as far as we could go. It isn't our job to search him for weapons or drugs, thats the job of the police.

Yeah, the police made a mistake in trusting the CraigL and his boss had done a thorough job of handling the fellow...

LOL he was handled in a manner fitting the type of person he is. Between being dragged to the ground kicking and screaming by us, then being forcefully pushed through a crowd of people, with my boss basically explaining loudly he would be arrested and he was the lowest form of scum. I think he may think twice about coming back if and when he's out of hospital.

He was a shoplifter. Not a Samurai. What he was doing was trying to conceal the drugs from the police by swallowing them.

I think our Doug knows more about these dodgy individuals and their equally dodgy habits than he is letting on... ;)...!

Well, there is a silver lining here: with any luck, the world will soon be rid of another wretched, tweaky meth-head... ;D

When I worked in a grocery store, we were told to never attempt to physically stop someone who was shoplifting, but to let management know, and they would call the local police.

Yes correct. Sorry I didn't elaborate. I meant to include that, but trailed off into a differant statement. In my original I state he was alot more nervous and trying to negotiate his release more than previous shoplifters I have had to deal with in the past. The bag of drugs is clearly why as that carries a prison term in most cases, where as simple shoplifting these days is a fine and suspended sentence.

As have I, but it turns out shop workers here now have a little more leeway as to how they can handle shoplifters if they feel it is safe to do so. Had I been alone, I wouldn't have done so, but because it was the manager who grabbed me and told me to help I wasn't going to argue, as the guy was heading for the door where we are not allowed to do anything beyond. Calling the police took 20 odd minutes so waiting would have been pointless. Since my boss is a big guy, 6'2 280lbs (20 stone) I wasn't too worried about the guy trying to rob the place:)

Well in England your far less likely to end up being shot for challenging a shoplifter than in the states.

True, with the added bonus that with a bit of luck, he won't be sponging of my hard earned taxes again either.
