Don't worry, Hadlow. It's because of those young idiots that young adults have a bad image in the public eye [I'm 21 just to let you know]. Ever wonder why the cost for car insurance for young adults is so high in America? TSC just showed the answer to that question with a simple link. ;D

It might be different in the US (as many things are) but apparently the statistics in the UK show that young adults between the age of 17 - 25 have the most accidents. These are legal drivers, not joyriders. I doubt the kids in that car have anything to do with it as I suspect they're well below the legal driving age of 17.

Those photos were taken in Bournemouth, Dorset, England, in case you hadn't noticed. ;)

It's another of those things that are according ot the particular state; driving ages start at 14 to 18 (with permits, insurance and driver's ed. adding to the variable).

Don't forget about having a liscensed adult by your side as well while driving between certain times [curfews]. ;)

What tards! Shoot on sight!  :P

Its a sad state of affairs when you're 18 and you by a decent car (Aston Martin V8 Vantage say) the insurance companies wont let you insure it because you're a risk!

Er, actually, thats because very few 18 year olds have the experience or any idea how to actually drive such powerful cars properly.

Look at Wayne Rooney, he can easily afford any car he wants - but I wouldn't let him push my shopping trolley around the supermarket for fear of him crashing it into someone.

Money dosen't equate to driving skill & this site proves it:

Description:
With only 353 miles on the odometer, this Enzo sustained approximately $400,000 in damages. Rumor suggests that this car was being driven by the owner's son. The owner apparently owns a huge RV manufacturing company or dealership. This is actually the 2nd Enzo to be wrecked. A yellow Enzo holds the honors as the first wreck.

I don't understand your logic. These kids might be idiots but they're just as likely to steal my car as yours. I'm not sure where I would stand regarding insurance if they wrecked it in the process as they're very rarely caught.

Well, I don't know how it is over there Hagar, but over here statistically speaking, young drivers have more wrecks...and the worst wrecks.

And yes...even more than elderly drivers (actually, theirs tend to be fender-benders.)

I'm not disputing that at all. All I'm saying is that these figures are based on insurance company statistics for legal drivers. Despite what Katahu & Andrew seem to think, the joyriders we're discussing would have no effect on this. They might cause an overall increase in insurance costs but this would not affect them for simply being young drivers.

Elderly drivers are actually among the best & get reduced insurance premiums because of it. Female drivers are also considered more careful than males of any age. I'm not sure this applies to the young female drivers I've seen around here who are if anything worse than their male counterparts, not only where driving is concerned.

Actually, Govenor Jeb Bush has just signed into state law that Florida residents are now allowed to "shoot" at anyone who is threatning their life and/or property. Besically, it's common sense. It also sends a clear message. You rob somebody or threaten somebody, you run the risk of getting shot. Period.

Sorry, I thought he said "illegal." ::)

I'm very well aware of that law.

If you were to shoot at a car with teenagers acting like...well...teenagers, do you really think it would be justice?

Can you put your hand on a bible and say you never did anthing stupid when you were that young?

lderly drivers are actually among the best & get reduced insurance premiums because of it. Female drivers are also considered more careful than males of any age. I'm not sure this applies to the young female drivers I've seen around here who are if anything worse than their male counterparts, not only where driving is concerned.

I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing here Hagar.  Here in Northern Michigan, there is a huge population of elderly.  I'm talking people who drive too slow (such as 25 in a 45 zone), who have very poor reaction times due to things like poor eyesight, beginning of dementia, or both. Or those who have dizzy spells due to diabetes.  People who obviously shouldn't be driving.

You have to practically move Heaven and Earth to get a driver's license revoked for such a person (outside of their being involved in some catastrophic accident ::) ).  Sometimes doctors or police can rever them to the Dept. of Transportation, but it's usually the families who have to resort to tricks to keep them from driving.

Part of this is due to the fact that America, with some exceptions, has piss-poor public transportation systems (especially in rual areas).  It's also due to this:

Being able to drive = independence

That's mostly what it's about.  America is all about the rugged individual.  And the loss of independence is devastating (and not only here).

But as I said, even taking that into accout, their accident rate does not measure up to those of teenage drivers.

once drivers in the UK reach the age of 70 they have to apply for their licence to be renewed every year.

It's definitely not that way here.  Remember...America is the country of Rugged Individualism and we live in the driving state of America...what with Detroit and all.

Recently, a person started riding instead of driving (it was on MSN).  He got all kinds of stares as if he was wierd.  I'd love to be able to ride a bike, but our town is not bike-friendly.  Drivers don't yield and there are few lanes for bikes.

I wonder if the solution needs to be cycle-only streets, separating the cycle and auto traffic...
