It's somebody's fault: a mistake was made somewhere, not that I think anyone should be made a scapegoat.  The planes are supposed to stop on the runway, or at least before they reach the road... I wonder what sort of barrier is in place there, if any? after that "whoopsy" at Teterboro a while back, they put in a crash barrier between the end of that runway and the highway, which was long overdue. Hard on the plane and possibly the pax, but slamming into cars is no picnic either... better to not use occupied vehicles as crash barriers.

there is not much over run room at all at midway. i think its something like 84 feet where as all airports require atleast 1000 feet now...midway has no room to expand.

There was nothing that could be done. When the plane landed it speeded  up and even if it had landed on a really long runway it may have veered out of control still because it was on ice and the landing gear collapsed. I am full of praise for the pilot who mananged to keep it straight and control the skid so well.   8)

There seem to be two separate threads on this so I won't repeat my comments in the other one. On airports where the end of a runway abuts or crosses a public road, safety arrangements cannot be totally satisfactory for all cirumstances. Whatever the height of a barrier & no matter how strong it is an aircraft can still fall out of the air on to the road. This has happened before & I see no way of preventing it. The fact that it's extremely rare is a credit to air safety in general.

sadly enough i went to visit midway. it's a very beautiful airport, ery well maintainted, but stuck right in the slums of chicago.

the room thing is true. Not too long ago I travelled on the road parallel to the north side, and you can see the end of the runway at the street corners. i dont know when i go down there next, but IF i do, i'll take pictures.

midway is the diamond in the rough, no joke.
