the majority of these rioters are bored young hooligans taking advantage of the situation

I didn't realise there was an England away match in Paris :o ;D

Not that I'm terribly proud of this, but as shown in New Orleans after Katrina.  :-[

The US authorities will only put up with this type of stuff only so long. Then it goes to deadly force.  :(

Normally this coincides with po'ed citizens that get fed up with rioters or looters and start the deadly force before the authorities.  :(

Remember Kent State? A truly shameful event in US history.  :'(

On the one hand, one should keep the mob under control and punish them, but on the other hand, one should listen to them and their problems.
Hopefully, the french government will get that sorted out as soon as possible.

I agree with you 100% on that point.

Here is an example of why some rioters (at least in the US) can tend to be a bit unreasonable and totally unrealistic in their demands.

Back in the late 70's in Liberty City (near Miami), Florida. A riot broke out for reasons I can't recall. But during the riots, most of the business's in town were burnt flat. The following week, another riot broke out. This time, because they were out of work!   ???

I do not think it's fair to compare the on going riots in France with the Miami/LA/Katrina lawlessness.

Yes, in the sense that there's some undercurrent of frustrations (putting it mildly) but in the Miami/LA cases they petered out after a couple of days or so.

To have these riots going on after almost two weeks, and spreading means that there is either an incredible level of frustrations, or that there are elements taking advantage of these frustrations, pushing them on, especially against a (seemingly) timid governmental response.

This is another thing that surprises me. From what I've heard the French police don't usually mess around.

I'm not so sure about that. I know that I wouldn't wish to tangle with the French riot police. They're nothing like Inspector Clouseau or the stereotypical gendarme*.

*PS. They're frightening enough. Ask my brother.
